Ramon Novarro house was owned later by Diane Keaton and also Christina Ricci.
Interior pics are found by Googling "Diane Keaton art deco". Nearby is also Brad Pitt's large compound. It's gated area.

Your pictures provoked a return to another recently posted image that the source describes as a view West on Wilshire from Fairfax. I recall it being mentioned on NLA that the Wilshire "Specials" extended west only to Fairfax. Was there anything special about the west-of-Wilshire Specials? I hasten to add that Westwood had its own variety of Specials.

The building with the "Coffee" sign at the top of the steps is the Auto Club building, with the High School to its left.

The building in the background of e_r's Burkshire detail appears to be this one near the north portal of Hill Street tunnel. I'm sure we've seen this 1961 photo before, but I could only find a similar image with the building just out-of-shot.

The classic Wilshire Specials seen in this shot were only installed west to Fairfax; the house seen at left, built in 1918, is one of the Trump-size handful of houses still standing on the boulevard. It's across from the intersection of Wilshire & Van Ness...full story here:

Let's take a look back in time.

The home was originally built for Louis Samuel.

"Wright met Louis Samuel through actor Ramon Novarro. Samuel and Novarro met in dance class years earlier, and, by the middle of the 1920s, the former had become the actor’s personal assistant and business manager. By then, also, Novarro was Hollywood’s first Latin-American superstar, with his most popular role being the lead in 1925’s Ben-Hur.

"Wright created an Art Deco/Mayanesque masterpiece. The four-level home was built into the side of a hill with concrete and oxidized copper throughout (even the floors are concrete). Nearly everything was incorporated in the first floor: dining room; living room; kitchen; the home’s sole bedroom; and the lounge which lead to the outdoor swimming pool."

In 1930, Novarro discovered Samuel had been embezzling from him. Not only was Samuel using the money to play the stock market (not a great move in the fall of 1929), put he was also using his client’s money to pay the mortgage on his Los Feliz home. Now, Novarro wasn’t the type of guy who needed the press digging around in his private affairs, so he quietly opted not to press charges. However, he did take over ownership of the Wright house."

We've already seen the 1929 picture below in Godzilla's post #12924, but that was over three years ago, and it seemed worth repeating amid the current discussion of the Wilshire/Fairfax area and Wilshire Specials. It's very clear from this image that the Wilshire Specials did indeed stop at Fairfax.

Godzilla's post also includes a similar detail view to this, but none of my numerous searches found it, so I thought I'd caption it. First, there's Hugh Evans & Co Inc in the Wilshire Fairfax Tract Office offering "Wilshire Blvd Frontage". Somewhere behind the fence there's a Yellow Cab Station. Finally, as BifRayRock noticed before, there's an advert for La Bohème Cafe on the Sunset Boulevard. This would later become the site of Simon's Drive-In.

There's some writing over the entrance, but I can't read it. Sorry if this has been answered before. In the background, La Brea Park is full of oil wells.

It was working fine for me earlier, but now it won't show the large versions of my most recently uploaded images. It's also incredibly slow and failing every upload I try. After six months of cluelessness from Photobucket earlier this year I really thought they'd got their act together. Apologies if any of my images are currently missing - I'm sure they'll be back soon. Strangely, I had no problems with the site last week when they warned of possible problems during maintenance!

Edit: It looks like I may have jumped the gun in condemning Photobucket. They have actually posted something useful on their Facebook page (they obviously don't mind when it's someone else's fault!):

Thanks for your post about the Ramon Novarro House, e_r. The Theater Center model still reminds me too much of a wedding cake, but maybe I can appreciate it a little more now.

According to Hardin Honda's website, Hardin Oldsmobile started selling cars in 1957 in a converted gas station on Anaheim Boulevard. I'm assuming that this Julius Shulman picture shows their first purpose-built showroom. It's "Job 3720: William Ficker, Hardin Oldsmobile (Anaheim, Calif.), 1964".

Hardin Honda has now moved to 1381 S Auto Center Drive, but their old building at 1300 S Anaheim Boulevard is still standing. Although the business there now sells quads and jet skis, part of the old Hardin sign has recently been revealed.
