Smile Ottawa Series Begins: Hintonburg

Ottawa Tours:

HintonburgSandy Hill North

Hintonburg
Ottawa, Ontario

Hintonburg is an older neighbourhood on the west side of Ottawa. A commercial strip runs through the neighbourhood along Wellington Street. North of Wellington is a working class neighbourhood of small wooden houses on narrow streets probably dating to around the turn of the century. The houses south of Wellington are mostly brick and appear to have been built later, some well into the 1920s and 30s. Today the neighbourhood is considered "up and coming" and seems popular with the artistic community.

We'll start in the area north of Wellington:

Gambrel roofs are very common in Ottawa

An old industrial area. Some factories have been replaced with modern infill.

The commercial area along Wellington St.

South of Wellington, brick predominates.

Some post modern homes

The southeast section looks very upper middle class

Great shots of an up-and-coming neighbourhood Flar! An excellent first contribution to the Ottawa section.

I love this building, one of my favorites in the entire city!

Would it be blasphemous of me to say "Ottawa ain't Hamilton"?!
I always enjoy visiting Ottawa, however outside of downtown I find many of the neighborhoods quite banal. Maybe that is being a bit harsh, I don't know. If anyone can show them as interesting it is you. I wait with bated breath!
Anyway flar, after all that drivel....good post!

nice to see your spirit of neighbourhood exploration continues in Ottawa, flar

Ottawa appears to be quite different from Hamilton in terms of built environment... though this unpretentious neighborhood would still fit in well with many of the neighborhoods you featured... I love the gambrel roofs!

Great way to start off Ottawa. I learned a lot about Hamilton from your threads, and while I have never been to or been near Ottawa like I have Hamilton, I am looking forward to learning a lot about your new hometown.

I can't wait to see what you do with other neighbourhoods, especially now that the grass is turning green and the trees are about to bud.

Nice photos, man.

By the way, in one of the earlier shots, you snapped a picture of my buddy Dave's place.

My girlfriend and I were pretty close to buying a house in this neighborhood and we really regret not taking it. It was a super price and literally on the fringes of the sweeping renewal. Live and learn...

Not blasphemous at all

I was in Mixed Media last week and commented to hmagazine how I was missing your presence in Hamilton. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Ottawa, but as stated previously it certainly ain't going to be Hamilton.

As always, great photos.
