Thanks for all of the information, Robert. Yeah, almost as soon as I posted my comment above, I did a google check of Johnstown, noticing that the great flood was far earlier than I posted. Ah well, I knew it was a long time ago! Seriously though, I'll definitely read McCullough's book before I head out there.

I drive a truck for a living, and our freight depot is one of the few still serviced by a rail spur. Today I managed to catch the CN switching consist spotting our new boxcars, loaded with huge steel discs. The depot has enough room for 6 of them right inside the building, and another six for outside unloading.

Notice the conductor leaning against the wall waiting to close the door. CN is pretty efficient, takes them all of 10 minutes to swap out 6 cars.

It's always gratifying to see an efficient crew making the best use of time. So often I've watched in frustration while trying to get a particular action shot, as local crews (esp. in the Conrail era) seemed to do everything they could to kill time, figuratively standing around scratching their butts and picking their noses, arguing with the dispatcher over stuff, anything to accomplish as little work as possible for a day's pay. Swapping out six cars would have taken them at least half an hour if they had been feeling unusually motivated.

The slug (#206) is interesting. I rarely see those in our midwestern US flatlands. Years ago while installing some computer hardware in a warehouse in Tampa, Florida, I saw a lot of them in use on phosphate trains on CSX predecessor SCL/Family Lines.

Not exactly trains, but some beautiful old train stations.


Russellville, AR 1906 station where president Roosevelt made a visit to while traveling across the country.


A small station in Perry, AR which probably wont be around in a decade or two.


While driving some back roads I caught this building out the corner of my eye, believe it or not, it was a tiny little train station located in the dying community of New Blaine, AR. The railroad tracks are no longer there but an abandoned caboose was laying back in the forest.

That tiny stone depot is very unusual, and a real gem!

Yeah, Ive never seen one like it before. I got inside it through that little hole in the door and it looks like someone tried to make it into a museum back in the 70s or something as there were news clippings of the old railroad that ran through the town and stuff all over the walls and other train related things. The depot also still had the original iron bars inside at the desk where you would buy your tickets. That rail line I surmise would have ran up to Ft. Smith, AR then along the Arkansas River Valley through Russellville and all the other river towns then finally Little Rock and wherever else the people needed to go. I can only hope that little station doesnt get torn down but I doubt theres much hope for it as the town its located in looked to only have a handful of residents now.

Nice job, Glowrock! Make summer plans to go to Strasburg, just a stone's throw from Lancaster, for the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and operating steam on the Strasburg Railroad. Pennsylvania has the greatest abundance of rail museums and operating rolling stock of any of the states, I think, and West Virginia does well for itself, too, with Cass Scenic Railroad and other operations in the vicinity.

Thanks, Robert! Yeah, I need to get out to the whole Amish Country area (Lancaster and the region) this Spring once the weather warms up a bit... Need to check out the railroads (and other things)!

Heard about the Cass Scenic Railroad, need to look into that.
