In honor of going to visit my mom this weekend for her birthday (she lives in Sparks), I thought I'd scrounge up these pictures I took of Reno last year, around the same time. I'm not sure if I'll get around to taking any more this weekend.
I apologize for the quality of these night shots, they were taken with my small point and shoot and no tripod.
Reno by day...
A popular place for breakfast apparently...
I don't even remember when I took these...but, I liked the clouds.
Nice pictures. I've only driver through Reno on the way to Tahoe, didn't have any time to get out and check it out. Looks better than what I had expected seeing it from the road.
I like Reno too. Looks like there have been some changes since I was there last. What ever become of the old Mapes Hotel? Did they ever build something new there?
Great shots as always, stepper!

What's this? It looks like Atlas lost his globe...
Great pics BTW. I always thought that Reno would be some kind of extract of Las Vegas. But when I look at these photos it seems to me that the city has a lot more character than Las Vegas. Maybe I should pay Reno a visit the next time when I am in the US.
That building is a hospital. I think it had just opened or was going to open when I took the pictures. Perhaps someone who is more familiar with it can expand on it.

Thanks for all the comments. Downtown Reno, beyond the casinos, does have a lot more charm than one might expect. The UNR campus is also really nice. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to take photos there.
Interesting photos. I knew there had to be more to Reno than what you see on Reno 911!
What I also found interesting is how much Reno doesn't look like a southwestern city. Most of those pictures look like they could have been in the Northeast or Midwest. I guess that's because the city is in the mountains and has a more temperate, and perhaps wetter, climate than most of the Southwest. So they can have green grass and some trees. Also, there are forests fairly close by in California where they could get lumber for wooden homes, so everything isn't brick and stucco like most southwestern cities.
Nice thread Stepper!! Reno is a much different city than Las Vegas. It actually seems to have a downtown area. Does Las Vegas even have one? You would think with all the people moving there it would have one. Oh well. More power to Reno!!
