Strathcona is a large, historic, urban neighbourhood northwest of downtown Hamilton.
This neighbourhood has everything from tiny cottages and rowhouses to highrises and
large mansions. Strathcona features two of Hamilton's best known landmarks: Dundurn
Castle and the Cathedral of Christ the King. Photos from inside and outside Dundurn
Castle are at the end of the tour.

The first photo shows the Cathedral of Christ the King, seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese
of Hamilton. The cathedral was built in 1931 and its exterior consists of limestone while its
tower dominates the western entrance to Hamilton.

Dundurn Castle (1832)
This 72 room, 18,000 sqare foot regency villa was built for Sir Allan Napier MacNab. MacNab was a successful businessman,
lawyer, politician and war hero who played an important role in pre-Confederation Canadian history. Today, Dundurn Castle
is a National Historic Site and is open to the public for tours.

This is the neighborhood that I inadvertently drove into when I was trying to take Highway 8 to Kitchener from the expressway (403 I think?) I thought it was nice, but I didn't have time to see it. I noticed the "Main West Esplanade" neighborhood signs; what are those for?

I think I recognize a couple of the streets that I was on.

I think I recognize a couple of the streets that I was on.

Main West Esplanade is supposed to be a shopping district, but it's hard to have a successful shopping district with narrow sidewalks along a 60km/h 5-lane one way road with synchronized stoplights and transport trucks flying by.

I couldn't get a good shot that really showed what the park was like, it's a big park, 4 full blocks. An aerial shot would work best. Here is a map showing the park's redevelopment:

i work at the church that bought the old King St. Baptist building (across from Gilbert's Big & Tall) at 458 King West. its been fantastic getting to know the businesses in the neighbourhood so far - they're very friendly. And how long they've been there is incredible. Gilbert's.. 54 years there now. Tony's Barber Shop.. 39 years.. La Moda hair.. there for 45 years... amazing. And they all seem to really love the neighbourhood.

The 458 King West parapet out front is being rebuilt right now (you'll see the scaffolding outside). with some other renos (not huge, and not a huge budget - its mostly bringing up to code for electrical, new washrooms, HVAC, etc.. + an addition to make it wheelchair-accessible, glassed-in portico, new exterior, etc). there should also be a rock garden out front with a couple seats. Mostly done by October 1, should be completely done by mid/late October

When the renos are done with the landscaping... flar, i'd love to see a picture of it taken by you I hope it looks as good its been planned to be.
