The best example of a tower built with cross bracing, love it.

I was working in this building for a while about two years ago. I got a chance to get on the roof. An amazing experience I will NEVER forget. It was at night and the wind up there was incredible. There's also an interesting ecosystem goin' on up there as well. bats, dead and alive in addition to giant spiders and other creepy crawlies. So gnarly!

Definitely one of the best skyscrapers in the US. It is my favorite representation of the 60s/70s era now that the WTC is lost.

Definitely one of the best skyscrapers around. I love how it drawfs the other buildings around it. It might not be the prettiest building, but it is a magnificent brute. I'm looking forward to seeing it again when I'm there in the summer.

This is definitely one of my favorite buildings ever.
It dominates the Northern part of the skyline with it's sharp, black exterior.

And I should mention, the views from this building are truly incredible. I would definately advise going to the observatory if you ever go to Chicago.

I took these 3 photos when I went downtown earlier this December.

She looks as though she might be ready for a fresh coat of black paint. This is my favorite modern skyscraper ever built. It's pure evil.

I agree it's in serious need of a cleaning and refinishing. One of my friends works in this building, the office spaces are nice. High floor to floors + excellent views. Not a big fan of the apartments, before I moved into where I currently live, I considered the apartments here but they were kind of dated looking. But from the outside, it's gotta be my favorite skyscraper in the city.

Interestingly the JHC is not painted black, its actually a coating applied to the exterior panels via electrolysis. It is essentially a black colored rust induced by running a high current through the metal while it is submerged in a solution of certain ions. Theoretically it never needs to be reapplied or painted and should stay just as black as the day it was zapped for all eternity.

That said, it's pretty clear the building is rather dingy right now and what it really needs is a nice powerwashing to blast all the filth off of it. Does anyone know when the last time they sealed the facade was? These buildings need to be sealed every 50 years or so as the original seals wear out. They usually clean the facade as a part of the process. It's pretty cool how they fix the seals actually. They go into the units and remove the interior panels on the window and they have one guy watch on the inside as another guy on the outside blasts the seals with a power washer. The guy on the inside then looks for any signs of water infiltration and then they cut out and re seal any problematic segments. I saw them do it to 5415 N Sheridan Road while I lived there and that building has a very similar black anodized aluminum curtain wall.

^Thanks for sharing that...seriously...that's an interesting way of how they got the color and also how theoretically it just needs to be "cleaned" to restore the original color instead of being painted.
