Haverhill, Mass.

Haverhill, Massachusetts is a city of 58,000 and is the third city of the Merrimack Valley, after Lowell and Lawrence. It's pronounced HAY-vr-ull. The city was a major shoe manufacturer for 150 years, up until the depression. In my last thread I said Lawrence was the sight of the first Macy's department store. It was Haverhill. That's what happens when you read about two cities at once. Don't believe a word I say.

Downtown Haverhill was a unique combination of 8-story buildings and open-air horizontal grade-level car storage facilities.

Wingate St.

blue, red, green

It was hard to get a satisfying photo of these buildings, hence the repetition.

Before & after

Essex St.

From the train platform. I assume it's a commuter line to Boston.

You gotta wonder what used to fill these parking lots. One could only assume buildings of the same massing and quality. This must've been quite the downtown.

The Merrimack River

Washington Street, the main drag. It was a pretty nice downtown, and it seems like that is a fairly recent development. The residential neighborhoods immediately outside downtown were pretty ratty.

From Washington Square

This one had been turned into condos and seemed to be occupied.

Locke Street was a big construction zone.

Duncan St.

Locke Street again

Renovations are afoot in Haverhill, Mass.

You should be calling your last few threads the "towns with massive brick buildings series"

The density is remarkable...if they managed to fill all those old buildings with people...fantastic job. I enjoyed this one a lot!

Nice tour! I've never stopped here but been through town on the Amtrak Downeaster on the way to Boston several times.

You captured it well! Interesting place. I used to go to Northeastern, and worked at the college radio station as a newsreader. On my first day I mispronounced Haverhill's name big time! Not being from the area how would I know?

Wow, this place is freakin' cool...some serious structures around there.

This was hilarious, by the way: "open-air horizontal grade-level car storage facilities".

Many thanks.

Very nice thread. You got some good shots in. Although there were quite a few empty buildings, it seems to be in better shape than Lawrence.

I feel like such a putz. I stopped by the city on a new England trip a few years back. I just stuck around Washington Street, near the river. If only I'd gone back a couple of blocks I would have seen those great narrow brick canyon streets. Thanks for the tour Tt, next time I'm in the area, I'll know better.

Great pictures!! Never been to Haverhill but a lot of these pictures remind me of many of Connecticut's smaller cities like New Britain, Norwich, New London and Waterbury.

it is happening and has for the past 5 years even in the tough economy. The issue is the area directly to the north of the downtown. Downtown itself has done fairly well but that outlying area is a drag on it reaching it's full potential
