Jane Jacobs' New York Neighborhood - Greenwich Village

These have been sitting on my hard drive since last fall. Flar's thread about Jane's more recent Toronto neighborhood reminded me to upload them.

When she wrote Death and Life, Jane lived in Greenwich Village on Hudson Street, near the corner of Perry.

She lived in the first of the low buildings on the left. With the brown brick and the blue sign.

555 Hudson Street. The ground floor was a candy shop in Jane's day.

This is what she saw immediately across the street.

The following are just random pictures from the neighborhood. I had very little time when there, so it's not at all a comprehensive tour.

As I understand it, Nicole Kidman, Martha Stewart and Ralph Lauren live in these towers.

Some other random pictures, taken *from* the neighborhood, but not *of* the neighborhood.

Jersey City.

As far as urban neighborhoods go, it doesn't get much better than Greenwich Village. Great photos.

When i looked at that Toronto thread yesterday, i thought to myself "how could she have ever left Greenwich Village for that neighborhood?" Your photos have left with me with more questions than answers. Love the Village!

Good pictures. I almost like Greenwich Village. It is the closest thing to quiet and open space you'll get in Manhattan.

Greenwich Village definitely doesn't feel like it looks in photos, especially once you walk into it from north or south. I love the lighting in the pictures, it reflects the ambiance of the way it was when I was there last.

I bought a bottle of Old Crow there in January, behind a rather pricey wine purchase, and didn't get a second look. Then gave it to a man (a man who looked of the neighborhood, not necessarily the street) on the street. Not saying its the same as in Jacobs time, but its not dead yet...or at least in the dead of winter when they are where its warm.

Off the top of my head, Julia Roberts, Julia Stiles, Uma Thurman, Olsen Twins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hilary Swank.

The Village is big as a "Hollywood East." Most traditional money in NYC is uptown.

Julia Roberts lives in Gramercy. Not exactly A-list but I've seen Seann William Scott at the Equinox on Greenwich several times. Yum!

Well then she used to live in the Village, because a coworker of mine lived in her old building on Fifth Ave. at 12th Street.

I would say why would anyone leave the Annex for Greenwich Village personally, but to each their own.
