The Stinson Neighbourhood
Hamilton, Ontario

I've always liked this neighbourhood, it appears to be an old middle class neighbourhood. Most of the structures were built between 1865-1895. A lot of detached and semi-detached, not many rows, but a great variety. Much of it is in good shape too, with many renovations in recent years.

Beautiful houses, and they look like they are in good shape. I guess there isn't any wood siding there, which I think is typical for Ontario.

Yes, houses from this era are predominantly brick in south-central Ontario. The house below is the only wooden Victorian house I can recall seeing in Hamilton, where nearly everything is brick. You see a lot more wood houses in extreme Southwestern Ontario. My hometown of Wallaceburg, for example, has very few old brick houses. However, Wallaceburg's downtown commercial buildings and old industrial buildings are generally brick. You can also see some nice wooden Victorians in my Sarnia thread.

They don't make them like that anymore! back in the summer I had some renos done on my house and the guy that did the work snapped multiple blades trying to cut through part of the baseboard..lol! he kept commenting on the quality of the wood they used then and how the builders real knew what they were doing! I would buy one of those houses in a heart beat as long as most of the plumbing and electrical is a ok and the foundation is sound, I live in the Locke street area and there are some real gems around here as well!

Gorgeous. I especially love the school. I think at least parts of it have been designated, which is good and bad. The board can't tear it down or 'renovate' all the character out of it, but it also gives the board a convenient excuse to close the school. I know Stinson struggles with a high-needs, transient population and has narrowly escaped closure in the past. Let's hope the board can keep their mitts off it and give this beautiful neighbourhood a chance to revilatize.

haha...too late highwater. the Hamilton school board is fixated on closing urban schools in order to build cardboard boxes in the suburbs.
Heaven forbid they become a champion of smart growth and urban revitalization. No sir, they're just as bad as Walmart and the mcmansion builders.
Stinson is already slated to close. It was supposed to be demolished (big surprise) until the communities fought the board. Now they've decided to sell it (hopefully to a loft developer of some sort) instead.
Stinson and Queen Victoria school are being merged into one. Yes, that's right - Queen Victoria, downtown at Charlton and Walnut. A hefty walk for anyone, let alone kids.
A new school is being built at Queen Vic site as we speak. It will become the only school in this huge area from Wentworth-James. Central Public (Hunter and Bay) is the next closest to the west. Adelaide Hoodless is the next closest to the east (past Sherman).
A real shame.

The school board really wanted to demolish the Stinson St. School. Luckily the building now has a heritage designation. Stinson School was built in 1894 and is the last remaining Richardsonian Romanesqe style public building in Hamilton and one of only three remaining 19th century schools in the old city of Hamilton. The others are Central Public School and West Avenue School.
