[Halifax] Coburg & LeMarchant | ? m | 6 fl | Completed

Apparently the old management buildings at Dalhousie are being renovated. Does anybody know anything about this?

The plans were created by Fowler Bauld & Mitchell architects but nothing is up on their website.

All I know is that it has been fenced off since the fall.

(red brick building on the corner of coburg and le marchant)

It definitely needs to be renovated.

Dal is set to tear it down and build from scratch on the site - a 4-5 storey structure. The building as it stands now is condemned.

Details can be found in the second half of the text found at:

Aww, I like that building. The church portion has a lot of character, and the newer bit is nice and sharp looking, or at least it could be with a bit of fixing up.

I was walking by here today and one lane of the street was blocked off as they were putting new fenceposts in along the curb, and were in the process of moving the chain link fence out to it. This blocks the sidewalk on that side of the street, so it must mean they are very close to the beginning of demolition. I'll try to take picutes as it comes down.

I wasn't sure if they were going to try to save the church or just tear the whole thing down.

Those buildings are all pretty awful on the inside.

I went by there today and there was a big crane being set up on the street which tied things up for a while. They needed it because they are dismantling the management building and have removed quite a bit of the upper structure so far. There was another smaller crane on the side of the church and they had a hole in the sidewall near the top. I will try to get some pics. It was actually quite a sight.

So i guess we can now safely say that there is no renovations in the works. I'm not sure what happens to threads that never happen. We can change this into a thread for the new building being built there though.

I do really like this building. I question how it will fit in on Coburg street however.
I drove by the site today and it is a very large deep hole into the bedrock.

I drove by this site today, they have been working on the concrete base and it appears they have installed a bracket for a tower crane, so that should be going up soon.

I'm very excited about this one, and in general I'm really happy with how aggressive Dal' and St Mary's are in regards to planing for the future and actually getting projects off the ground

I drove by again at lunch and Irving Equipment has a 200 ton mobile crane on site so the tower crane must be going up in the next day or two.

Will this building have retail? This area could become a kind of "university village" for Dalhousie.

They'll probably also be building replacement residences for Fenwick soon. Not sure where they'd go, aside from maybe the large parking lot between Howe Hall etc. and the Dunn building.

Nice to here

I'm curious to know is this just replacements for the current/former administration building? Or is there more involved.

Alan Ruffman managed to get in a long complaint on the comments page here: http://dalnews.dal.ca/2008/07/15/bldg.html
