Dawg Shed Gone - UWT Assembly Hall Coming - Tacoma

The former site of the Dawg Shed is to become the new UWT Assembly Hall

Picture from UWT website

Project Number: 10686
Estimated Budget: $12,070,000
Construction Est. Start: 8/22/2007
Construction Est. End: 7/15/2008
Architect: Thomas Hacker Associates
Project Manager: Catherine Vogt
Construction Manager: Pat Brown

This project will replace the existing UW Tacoma facility know as the "Dawg Shed" with a new 20,250 gross square foot Assembly Hall to meet the need for a large multi-purpose gathering space. The site is east of the library, flanked on the south by the Cherry Parkes building, to the north by the Walsh Gardner building and to the east by Pacific Avenue. The building will function as an assembly space for lecture events, banquets, career fairs, and student exhibits. At other times the space will be used as a student commons for studying and as a student gathering place. Three multipurpose collaboration rooms are included. The facility will include storage space, service kitchen, toilet rooms and audio visual facilities necessary to support various gatherings of about 350 to 500 persons. The ground floor space on Pacific Avenue will be constructed as a pedestrian-oriented retail space.

Oh and the Ghost Murals on the buildings next door will be visible from inside of the Building. Its Tacoma, they wouldn't cover those things up.

It's exciting to see UWT grow. It's doing amazing things for DT Tacoma as well as Tacoma residents.

I wonder how much / how quickly the student population will grow. My understanding is that the limiting factor is money for more buildings. In terms of its presence Downtown, imagine how great 5,000 or 7,000 students would be instead of 2,500 or whatever.

you know this really sucks. UW Tacoma is just a satellite campus and I think it looks much nicer that Portland State University. Even when you compare the new buildings being built, Tacoma would win out...tell me if that just doesn't make sense.

Of course on a side note, this project looks good, it will make that little campus look that much better.
