Agreed. Any chance those mall threads can be deleted?

Can't wait to see what the area looks like when 1500 people (1000 students and 500 staff) of SFU start coming to the area!

Came back after a few hours to see this thread down the tubes. Vansky has been banned for 3days, for starting this. The other parties consider yourselves warned, a repeat in this or another thread will also lead to a suspension.

Back onto the topic, the glass mural is much farther away from the basketball hoop then it appears, you would have to be pretty determined to hit the mural, and by the time the ball reached it it wouldn't have very much momentum. not to mention the mural is protected.

I have to say I was quite looking forward to the atrium, but imagined it filled with students sitting in cafe chairs (much like the library atrium). I didn't realise it would have a basketball hoop. Wouldn't that be more appropriate under the viaducts? If there's a basketball hoop, why not a skate ramp or a tennis court?

I'm more concerned about it being right next the the London Drugs entrance and some overenthusiastic teens taking a few steps too many and knocking over a LD customer.

Don't forget this is only the covered atrium, the outdoor area is larger in scale.

No architectural merit? Hahaha.. Yeah, okay...

I'm sure what the downtown eastside needs more than anything is a Frank Gehry....

I was down at Woodward's yesterday and I'm really impressed with it. The London Drugs was fairly busy and the Nestor's is probably the biggest one in that chain. It's really weird standing in the London Drugs bright appliance area and seeing the derelict buildings across Hastings.

I don't think the basketball hoop needs to go. I think the simple solution would be to put up a floor-ceiling net that prevent balls & people from interfering with shoppers and other people. That way the area is still very much open and airy, but the necessary barrier is there to prevent complaints, spilled good, or someone actually getting hurt.

Thanks for your input? oh wait, there was nothing there that was constructive.

I mean, I'm a laymen in terms of this stuff (and I'm sure you are as well) but I would really love to hear what you would have done that would have kept the woodwards building as well? perhaps more buildings with organic curves and lovely GLASS (perhaps you can suggest some)

I like that it's blended in with the area at street level and then makes a statement as you turn your head up and see the red and the vine/plant motif. The flat-iron shape is quite nice too.

Certainly, one of your Dubai-esque 'masterpieces' would NOT fit into this area, nor would someone be able to build something like that AND have a social housing/community integration component to it. Your building would be so expensive that only millionaires could buy into it.

That's exactly the thought I have in mind, or someone with a baby in a stroller. I'd hate to see the hoop go, cuse people are clearly enjoying it, so I think the very best alternative is to put up a weighted fishnet to prevent incidents from occurring.

Being proactive vs reactive likely will produce better results in the end.

To give a more detailed description of what I am thinking of, basically imagine the chain link fence behind the batter at a baseball diamond. Have that same shape, including the inward slant at the top, behind the hoop. And as it comes around to either side, progressively have the top bar slope down so it is lowest at the sides of the circle, where it will end. Instead of chain link, have black, 1 1/2" spaced, 1/16th thick thread nylon netting connected to the poles on either side and the supporting bar on top. Then cover the poles, painted black or some other discrete colour, with padding on the lower 6 feet of the poles to prevent injury in a collision. So as to give the nets some give, have them slightly loose between poles, and not connected to the floor. Spacing between the supporting poles could be anywhere between 8-12 feet, so going around the circle you shouldn't need more than 5 or 6 (just my estimates eyeballing it from the picture).

This should provide a safe barrier between ball players and shoppers, while not really intruding on the overall airy feel of the atrium, nor would it screw up the opposing view of the mural.

Well art is certainly in the eye of the beholder... you are definitely in the minority on this one though.

While I am not a big fan of Vancouver architecture on the whole I think this is one of the best buildings to be built in Canada in ages. A real jem.

That it is, and it is a gem because of the grungier designs so as to fit in with it's area. I hope all future buildings built have the same lack of sterility and amount of colour this building has.

Besides, we all know what's happening to Dubai right now. Not something we want to emulate
