In CANADA?! Honestly, that's surprising. That's a pretty amazing amount of decay.

Wow! Simply tragic. My first thaught was to move the gays to town. They'd have occupancy at 90%, real estate values tripled, and annual fexstivals and parades within ten years!

Seriosuly to, intense pics. Thanks for posting.

Definitely not what I think of when I think of Canada. U.S., yes. I'd say Hamilton has a bit of a litter problem.

Like U.S. cities, I'd bet Hamilton has a lot of nice areas as well.

Awesome thread. The only way it could be better is if the pics were in black and white.

Wow, that's depressing to me, depressing isn't the word, I don't think there's a word in the English language that describes what those pics convey.

I'm glad you posted those though, so many pics in this forum show the pretty stuff. Poverty and decay seem to be taboo on SSP, indeed, this "looking the other way" and "wearing blinders" mentality is one of the reasons for that neighborhood getting to that state of decay.

I like pic #9, the one of the garbage strewn alley, yet I counted 9 satellite tv dishes on the roofs. People really have their priorities straight.

I hate clogs! The only people allowed to wear them is nurses and Dutch.

That's intense! It highlights the poverty issue in Canada. Hamilton is tied with Toronto for having the highest poverty rate in Ontario but since Hamilton is smaller to means Hamilton has more poverty per capita.

One of these days I'm gonna take pictures of a native reserve in Six Nations, that's even more intense!

And it appears that section in the photo above will be long gone within 10 years. Stelco announced closure of one plant, 300 jobs gone, about 2 days ago and more is to come. It's an old plant, 1940s, and costing too much to operate.

Stelco is not doing so well, but Dofasco (the other big steel company here) seems to be faring better.

You certainly don't see as much of this in Canada as the US. The US is generally more heavily industrialized than Canada, Hamilton is the single largest concentration of industry in Canada. Neighbourhoods like these are of course the result of the decline of heavy industry in N. America. One difference between Hamilton and US industrial cities is that Hamilton's stock of old houses and buildings is relatively still intact, whereas in Detroit or Buffalo, entire neighbourhoods have been razed.
And of course Hamilton has nice areas as well.

I imagined all these pictures as b&w when I was shooting them, but the overcast skies really gave a nice saturated colouring to the brick that I had to keep. Hamilton's all about the brick.
