Stelco is not doing so well, but Dofasco (the other big steel company here) seems to be faring better.

You certainly don't see as much of this in Canada as the US. The US is generally more heavily industrialized than Canada, Hamilton is the single largest concentration of industry in Canada. Neighbourhoods like these are of course the result of the decline of heavy industry in N. America. One difference between Hamilton and US industrial cities is that Hamilton's stock of old houses and buildings is relatively still intact, whereas in Detroit or Buffalo, entire neighbourhoods have been razed.
And of course Hamilton has nice areas as well.

I imagined all these pictures as b&w when I was shooting them, but the overcast skies really gave a nice saturated colouring to the brick that I had to keep. Hamilton's all about the brick.
