TVO series: The Life-Sized City

Original programming that might be of some interest here. Urbanist parachutes into city, provides an overview and talks to local movers and shakers at the grassroots level.

The series features an eccentric list of places from around the world. You get Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton and Windsor/Detroit in Canada, and then just New Orleans and the aforementioned Detroit in the US. And only Paris, Copenhagen, Milan and Barcelona in Europe.

Crap, I was hoping that you were being literal as I thought "Wow what a cool way to introduce a city!"

Watching now, thanks for sharing. This is the longest I've watched any program without checking my phone in a long time.

Ugh, I find that guy pushing every cliche-du-jour pumped by urban planning schools today. “Oh look street pianos.”

Lol, the Toronto on Montreal spots were ok. The Hamilton one was pretty interesting.

Sounds very cool - gonna have to try and find the time for this and the new Adam Curtis doc...

Where do they go in Toronto? I'll have to check out the Canadian and New Orleans ones as I'm most familiar with those places to get a sense of what picture they're painting.

I'm also interested in the Cape Town one and did a quick scan - seems like they spend a lot of time in the Townships instead of the rich "no you see, we're basically Europe" areas. Which is interesting as the city often gets painted in a certain light and not as the most unequal, segregated and dangerous city in the country by a not insignificant margin.

As an aside, TVO really is a pretty great network that gets constantly overshadowed.

I live a measly 140 km from Ontario and I can't get TVO... I find this incredibly annoying considering the dozens and dozens of utterly useless channels that I'll never watch once that my cable provider makes available.

I subscribe to The Agenda's podcast, but it's hard to keep track of what else is available.

I haven't watched yet, but I spotted one of those in downtown Stratford last time I was there a few years ago.

That's odd, as I've no issues getting Knowledge - BC's public broadcaster - here in Ontario.

The Toronto show, worth watching once, had a bit of a superficial travelogue feel. The bit about tearing down fences on private property was a bit radical and hilarious. Apparently Toronto doesn't properly know what it is yet, but still knows where it's going. I also found it a bit triggering that there is no show about Vancouver.
