The area around NSIT seems to have been known as "Rockhead" at one point but most of the old buildings are long gone.
Rockhead was the city prison that opened in 1854. There was a penitentiary on the Northwest Arm too. https://haligonia.ca/prisons-of-halifaxs-past-100111/

Here's a map of Halifax from 1890 (showing diptheria cases). In those days development stretched roughly to the northern end of the peninsula but only along the harbour side. Part of the reason why it spread so far in that direction was the rail line. A bunch of major employers were in the far North End like the Oland brewery, shipyard, factories off the Robie spur, and the Acadia Sugar Refinery.

The "city street" area of the West End (Edinburgh, London, Liverpool, Cork St, etc.) is quite old too. These streets were built and the lots subdivided starting in the 1880's or so but took a long time to be fully built out. They only have the odd Victorian-era house. Halifax grew slowly from 1880-1930, then expanded quickly in the 1940's-1960's.

Metro populations (wikipedia):

1881 - 67,917 (pretty big for 1881)
1931 - 100,204 (not very big for 1931)
1961 - 225,723 (high growth)

Since the 1880's or so, Halifax has gone back and forth as far as being a small or medium sized city compared with other contemporary cities (analogous to Calgary vs. Victoria today).

Toronto doesn't do the impressive, epic might of a megalopolis all that well...

If you can't have both, I'd definitely prefer a city with the latter.

Anybody know where this street/Alley is? St. Henri? Hochelaga-Maisonneuve?

EDIT: apparently it is in the Quartier Latin. Rue St. Christophe.

That's actually de Chateaubriand on the Plateau, a little bit north of Duluth.

i found that street on google maps, but it does not come very close to Duluth. I do suspect it is nearby, as it looks very familiar. I spent a lot of time in the Plateau during the 90s

That Toronto set above from Monkeyronin is great. Summer this year is wild, for obvious reasons. My friend who moved to the Queensway area of Etobicoke biked down today and we "bar hopped" getting beers and cocktails to go from various establishments and had them in parks. It's the wild west out here!

The one with the tram, light rail, plenty graffiti on the steel beams of the rail bridge, New York style traffic lights, and urban canyon in the distance (culminating with a bank's office tower, what else), looks really great in a "real big city" sense

(Not that easy to put what I mean into words, but I feel the vibe of that pic is the diametric opposite to those sterile-looking urban areas of Vancouver that are all homogeneous turquoise glass condo towers.)

Taken on King around Atlantic, looking East, I think. You can see the UP train and also the photoshopped "grafitti" from the photographer on the bridge! it's great. The vibe is very much what I consider Toronto in the summertime.

Wait a minute, the graffiti are photoshopped?!?!? I withdraw my comment, it's still Toronto-The-Good

No, it's almost all real but the KOTSY part is inserted! He's known for putting his name in his pictures in interesting ways. Trust me, it's definitely no longer Toronto-the-good these days, for better or worse (both, IMO)

Yeah, I actually saw that the others were real (looks nicer with the KOTSY filling up the room though - being used to it, the Street View at King/Atlantic feels empty without it).

It's just that the general exchange had me laughing...

- "Huh, grittier than I thought! Me likey! Thumbs up!"
- "Um... in the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that those graffiti are actually photoshopped"
