Yes, the superstructure of the building was actually specifically built to have two little super reinforced nubs where the bottoms of the antennas are attached to support them. If you look at the pictures of it after it topped out but before the cladding was finished you can see them as two metal cylinders about 2 stories high poking out of the roof. How that makes them not a structural element I don't know.

Again, the facade of the Sears Tower is not cheap, its actually pretty high quality. Like I said before, the building I live in was a cheap SCB design from 1974 (about the same time as Sears) and its held up very poorly compared to the Sears' facade.

The Sears Tower is not meant to be "Elegant" it is meant to be mean and in your face corporate architecture. It is meant to be imposing and to impress not to be mellow and blend into the background. It is an old school forceful he-man tower, the idea of putting a milder facade on it effectively castrates the building and turns it into a something its not: a pansy ass metrosexual mediocrity.

I'm sure in your next post you'll be proposing stripping the Hancock of its X bracing it and putting a nice brick facade on it with little pilasters and cornices and maybe a nice flying buttress or two holding up the antennae. (I shudder at the thought of such a horrible thing) Can they please hurry up and land mark these buildings like Hancock, Sears, Chase, IBM, Daley Center, etc. before someone like TallMark comes along and ruins them all with suburban office park facades?

Was this really necessary?

^^^ Not really, but I thought I'd have some fun and personify it. That was not meant to be offensive to anyone, just to be accurate. No matter how much the stereotype of manliness may be offensive to someone, the Sears was still intended to and does embody those characteristics. It is not a feminine form by any means and to re-skin it in a more "elegant" curtain would be attempting to put a dress on a body builder, it would just look funny even if you could make something designed for a person with curves and boobs fit on someone whose body gets constantly wider as it nears the top. It would just look silly...

Is it necessary to repeat the manly musings about the City of Chicago from our past? It is necessary to call it "the city of broad shoulders" or "Hog Butcher to the World"? No, but that's what it is, you can't deny the past or the masculine personification of this place.

Btw, I'm just about as non-manly as a guy can get, scrawny ass college student who could bench maybe 60 pounds if I even knew what benching meant or what a relatively low weight to be able to bench was...

I know, Sears without it's antennas would be like the ESB without it's spire

Sears Tower in silver?
REAL ESTATE | 110-story icon may get paint job to boost tenants, energy

The New York-based owners of Sears Tower want to know if adding silver will bring in some green.

Sources said the owners are considering an expensive paint job, recladding the tower in silver. Since its opening in 1973, Chicago's iconic tower and the nation's tallest building has been adorned in classic black.

A brighter look could draw fresh attention to the tower, which has struggled to hold tenants against newer generations of office buildings. Silver could figure into a broader effort to "rebrand" the building and highlight its advances in energy efficiency

Uh oh... That is not acceptable... Time to Landmark?

I know this isn't very scientific, but the poll on suntimes right now is 60%-40% against the reclading/silver. Maybe there is popular support in Chicago for maintaining the aesthetic of our classic towers?

I just heard about the reclad proposal on the radio. They only mentioned repainting. How would they change the color of the glass? A film?

No way would that end up looking good. I vote hell no as well.
