Another great example for you car guys/gals out there is the new BMW 4 series. The hideously over-sized vertical grills on the new generation of that car is near universally panned. Yet they continued forward.
Time will tell if both of those were the right decision or not.
Neither work for me, but the designers did not ask for my opinion. Hah

The BMW 4 has a gawd awful grill, I think Lexus started that trend. Perhaps its more function over beauty, keeping the engine cooler, but a over engineered radiator could do that. I don't know, but if sales are good... There's certainly a vast difference in taste regarding this and 405. I too wish design teams would consult the public during the design phases, but I'm pretty sure Picasso didn't solicit public opinion.
I know his paintings are almost priceless now, but if I didn't know that, I wouldn't even hang any of his paintings above my toilet.
