^The crown looks a bit weird in this and some other photos. It looks hollow and skeletal. Will the finished product look better?

Once the lights turn on for the full crown, should look a lot better. Its just the way the ambient light seeps through the crown. Similar effect for example with some Vista shots in the early morning or approaching dusk.

1 WTC has a similar effect depending on the angle and time of day where one can see the skeleton if not enough interior lighting is present to essentially drown out the translucent effect. Likewise with 432 Park.

More a bi product of the photo itself and how the tower plays with light via the glass elements. From the right angle, it will look slightly transparent where one can see the interior/mechanical.

The crown isn't hollow, there's mechanical crap in there. The less visible it is, the better.

Yep I understood that. I was hoping this is a temporary issue that would be fixed in the completed crown, e.g. by making the glass more opaque.

I agree. It's kind of unsightly.

As an aspiring stationary engineer who wants to work on skyscrapers, that mechanical crap is kinda cool, I have loads of pics I've taken of other skyscrapers from observatories, zooming right in on that stuff. I totally get why the architects would want to hide it though.

The glass is fine. With all of these modern, glass skyscrapers, if you're in the right place, at the right time, you will see that these towers are in fact nothing more than glass wrapped around steel, mostly open space.

its like it was just meant to be there.

and the best is yet to come, because we will all get to have access and use it.

Directly in front of the ESB is the Ritz Carlon hotel u/c at 1185 Broadway.

Near the water is 500 Washington which is Google's Campus.

To the left of the ESB and foreground relative to 432 Park in the shot is 113 West 24th Street which is a Renaissance Hotel. Its a garbage tower with a terrible design.

ahhh okay, thank you. I see you didn't mention the building in front of met life, so I assumed it was an existing building which turns out to be correct. I didn't look closely, I assumed it had orange netting but the building is just a redish-orange color from the sunset.

^^^^

That's One Grand Central Place. If your referring to the building directly in the foreground next to the "M" in Metlife.

Tower Crane: Favelle/Favco M760D
Derrick: Timberland Stiffleg

With the spire finally set in place (again) and the glass curtain wall completed, 1 Vanderbilt's last tower crane was dismantled and removed piece by piece over the last 2 weeks.

Each section of the crane was lowered around 1200 feet down to the street. The derrick will then be broken down small enough to be brought down via internal elevators.
