Portland in the Before Times

I feel so fortunate to have taken my family on vacation to Portland just mere months before it was burned to the ground! What a sad state of affairs in the Republic when a whole beautiful wonderful American city can be allowed to be over-run and allowed to be occupied and destroyed!

Portland...what a beautiful place it was...

Wow, you really have a great eye!

What a shame it is that Portland no longer exists. It was such a lovely place.

I feel like the hyperbolic tongue in cheek is lost on a lot of people here.

‘Burned to the ground’ might be “hyperbolic, tongue in cheek” but Portland like many West Coast cities, have a lot of challenges (homelessness and its environmental and economic impact) being one. In Portland’s case political upheaval and its impact on small business owners.

Hahaha yes, I'm so glad you made it before the Rose City apocalypse. You could never have taken such gorgeous photos now. It's all been burnt to the ground, and only the homeless occupy the rubble.

Great photos. It's sad that such ugly things can happen in such a beautiful place.

Sigh... Why even have the Skidmore Fountain if no one's ever going to take a picture of it?

Meanwhile, what's this building?

Federal Office Building. Built 1974, if I recall correctly, remodeled a few years ago.

The homeless camps and associated filth have ruined Austin as well. A state law banning camping in non-designated places, anywhere in the state, took effect today. As much as I despise 90 percent of Texas legislators, they got this one right. Portland definitely isn't alone on this issue.

Covid sure didn't help, all the shelters were unable to take people in, and clean-ip crews left the camps untouched for too long. Now things are getting back to "normal", and while clearing these camps generally only pushes people around, the local voters just passed billions in funding which will partially go to setting up 6 outdoor "safe rest villages" by the end of the year. They'll have showers, laundry, social services etc. The city is promising to move 1,000 people off the streets in this time frame, fingers crossed.

aww geez. we had been to portland and the oregon coast before, years ago, but we were really looking forward to spending like 10 days there, then did a ton of planning and local reservations, only to have covid strike. so we had to cancel everything. and we finally just used the rebooked plane flight for los angeles a couple weeks ago, which was fine, but what a bummer to have to change up and miss quality time in portland.

Beautiful city surrounded by beautiful natural landscape. Obviously a city that is vibrant and growing even during these times. I couldn't help but pay most attention to all those bridges. There are so few here, especially not that big. I appreciate the variety of the shots, of many different parts and aspects of the city, at different times, with different techniques. This probably my favourite: https://flic.kr/p/2mbyJ2j
