Rideau Street looking down Dalhousie 1938 vs 2014.

Old Union Station, now the Senate of Canada Building, u/c 1912 (though I'd say 1911 since it opened in 1912).

Not sure exactly where to put this (and it's probably been posted before) but the talk of the evolution of Canadian cities reminded me of this video of downtown Halifax in 1989:

The new Rideau Centre complex, 1983.

Also was the death knell to Sparks Street shopping 🛍.

View of the complex from a different angle in 2019. The Congress Centre was replaced with the larger, tulip shaped convention centre. The Westin added a glass event space on the 22nd floor. The Rideau Centre has underwent a major renovation inside and out, along with a major expansion (taking the space of the former Ogilvy Department Store seen in the middle of the 83' pic but not the 2019 pic). The Rideau O-Train Station is connected to the entire complex.

A scene in the Central Slum in the 1950s. The photographer is standing in an area already cleared looking toward a few remaining scraps where people were still waiting for their new accommodations (council housing) elsewhere.

Memorial University has been occupied several times, but never knew the high schools got in on the action as well.

Protestants protesting with Catholics back then warms my heart. That's when my mother was in school and my main... indication... of how it was back then was just a few years ago I was driving my mother downtown, took a turn off Freshwater Road on to Adam's Avenue and my mother grabbed the handle above the door like I was about to crash. I asked, in politer words, WTF, and she said, "Sorry... it's just when I was your age, a Catholic girl from Quidi Vidi didn't set foot in Pennywell." Like there was a literal moment of instinctive fear from her before she remembered it wasn't the 60s anymore. So knowing lots of little stories like that, a Gonzaga student leading students from PWC, who were WILLING TO JOIN, is really heartwarming. Well done, past kids lol

It is an interesting skyline for a smallish city with some great natural assets

This one freaks me out a bit. The opening vignette is EXACTLY the Newfoundland Folk Dancing style I was in as a child. And the first film they profile (Morning), is EXACTLY me. That's when all my pics are from, and for exactly that reason lol

The Vancouver I used to know. With all those seedy hotels that rented rooms by the month/week/day/hour.

Granville Street Bridge without a centre divider

Melville and Pender looks unrecognizable save for that one pre-war Apartment building.

Everything else, despite the massive numbers of condos today, looks familiar. Basically all the office buildings are the same today with some subtle logo changes.

Vancouver in those days looked more like a standard-issue Western Canadian city not all that different from Edmonton or Winnipeg in terms of built form. That's as compared to now when it is basically doing its own thing as far as Canadian cities go.
