The Times Square pedestrianization is a great success and not just because it's summer. Late Fall / early Winter are NYC's biggest tourist seasons, so I expect it will be even more full with people then, despite the weather. And I work right by the pedestrian islands they created last year along Broadway between 34th and 42nd Streets, and as long as the temperature is above 30 and a little sun is shining, there are always some people hanging out on the benches and tables.

I've never made it to the Park Avenue summer streets thing - I always seem to have plans when they do them. I'll have to make more of an effort next summer.

You know... thats what I was thinking as well. I think now that Times Square has been further pedestrianized, it could possibly surpass the Shibuya District for the worlds busiest pedestrian area/crossing.
