The original in Denmark is a mermaid, I believe ours was inspired by the Danish one.

Here's the waterfront one since no one has posted a pic yet

Well, King George Station doesn't have a statue or a plaque because it was named after the road it's on, not the dead inbred figurehead. I'm not bothered at all by the lack of some giant expensive bronze monstrosity, as there's been more than enough public money spent on the monarchs as it is.

There's a very nice statue dedicated to firefighters in Holland Park not far from King George Station. I don't have a pic of it though, and I can't find one on Google.

There's also the Warren Harding memorial in S-Park but I don't have a photo of it but here's one from the Vancouver Archives:

Ah, the infamous Harding Memorial. Do we even have any statues of Canadian Prime Ministers? And yet we have a memorial to one of the worst US Presidents.

^I know it's weird. It was paid for by the Kiwanis club though, which he was a member. It's odd if there isn't at least one statue of a PM and I can't think of any. I guess it comes down to money and who will pay for it as politicians and parties are divisive.

It was sooner or later someone would have to come out bashing the monarchy. Perhaps use one of the other existing threads on the subject if you're going to post misinformed comments.

Just throwing this question out there, why is Holland Park named Holland Park?

It's just an assumption on my part, but I like to think the park is named after the country we liberated in WWII. So I might be skating on thin ice, but I'd hazard a guess it was named so to tie it in with the fact that the adjacent highway was named after our head of state during WWII.

Nice picture JL. The way the copper oxidized makes it look very erie.

I looked for info about it can't find anything but came across this article by a veteran - seems the cenotaph is no longer at the park and they want it put back and shows some idea plans for the park which look good

I'm just guessing, but it could be named after Holland Park in London, there's also a Holland Park district there, and a Holland Park road.
Historically, there is a conection between the English throne and the Dutch House of Orange - King William III was King of England, but born in the Netherlands.
This would give it the significance that early Brit city pioneers wanted to bring with them.

But as I said, it's just a guess.

Origin of name Holland Park, Surrey

Having an inquisitive nature when it comes to subjects like etymology I searched and emailed, which was very difficult on the internet, about the origin of the name Holland Park in Surrey. It turns out it was named for one Alice Holland, whose pioneer family owned the property from the early part of the 1900s. In 1962 they sold the land to Surrey as long it was permanently a park. In 1972 there was a sod turning ceremony with Mayor Vanderzalm, Holland, and the Knights of Columbus.

Alice had a keen interest in heritage buildings and was a member of the Surrey Museum and Historical Society. She lived on the land in the last Holland house 'Rose Holly' until her death in 1981 at the age of 78.

Thanks to the reference clerk at the Surrey Archives for the info!

How is it an artificial reef if it's floating?

That's what they call it. Maybe they expect lots of barnacles and mussels to glob onto it (I think it has a honeycomb structure)?
