Some additional info & renders from the SOM website. Could be wrong, but I think that Adrian Smith (of Burj Dubai fame) had a hand in this, before he left the Chicago office to start his own firm?

Pearl River Tower
Guangzhou, China
In 2005, SOM presented plans for a new headquarters tower in Guangzhou that would incorporate the latest sustainable technology and engineering know-how in an attempt to create the world’s most energy efficient high-rise structure—a tower that could significantly reduce its dependency on the city’s infrastructure. Scheduled for completion in 2010, the 71-story, 2.3-million square-foot tower will be the most energy efficient supertall tower ever built, and a milestone along the way to energy independence.
Project Facts
Completion Year: 2010
Site Area: 10,635 m2
Project Area: 214,100 m2
Building Height: 309.60 m
Number of Stories: 71
Project Awards
2008 • Spark Awards • Green, Carbon-Lowering & Environmental Category: Gold Award

I was at a presentation in Boston about this tower and how it is "essentially" a NET-ZERO tower. I dont think people realize that this is one of the most energy efficient towers in the world.

Looks like you lose the middle columns where the wind generators are, so at that point the only thing holding it up and the 4 outer columns and the core concrete.
