So much of what mid-century folks thought was "decay" was just soot in need of a power washing.

A New Penn Station and New Madison Square Garden Alternative

The following solution is fool proof: At one time a new enclosed stadium was being considered to be built on a deck to be constructed over the yet to be developed western portion of the hudson yards. That never occurred, but since then, the 7 train extension has been built, the convention center has been expanded and a major retail shopping hub has been built on the eastern portion of hudson yards, making this a 100% accessible by public transportation business destination and playland. SOLUTION: build a new Madison Square Garden on a deck over the western portion of the hudson yards, across the street from the convention center with an underground pedestrian tunnel that connects to the 34th street 7 train station. THEN: Tear down the old Madison Square Garden and build the new above and below ground Penn Station there. It's a win win situation. A new Penn Station on the original Penn Station's footprint and a new Madison Square Garden in the city's hottest growing business and entertainment hub, all fully accessible by underground public transportation.

I forgot to mention that the landscape of the northern side (33rd St) of Moynihan is completed, though not yet open to the public. It's very nice, and I'm impressed at the amount of progress they made getting this building ready in a relative short amount of time.

That’s using your head! MTA takes out ‘head knocker’ beams from Penn Station

BY Kevin Duggan
MARCH 8, 2022

Quote:
Knock, knock, knocking your head no more!

Construction workers started removing massive low-hanging steel beams known as “head knockers” from Penn Station’s 33rd Street concourse this week as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s $559 million renovation of the notoriously cramped corridor.

“Everyone who uses the Long Island Rail Road concourse knows them and hates them, because they prevent us from having any human-sized head height,” said MTA Chairperson and CEO Janno Lieber during a press conference inside a construction site in the station Tuesday. “These are the main culprit in making Penn feel so dungeon-like, among other culprits.”
Quote:
The 10-ton beams are original to the old Penn Station, but hang as low as 6 feet, making them a hazard for taller commuters rushing through the passageway between 7th and 8th avenues.

Their removal is part of a larger almost four-year revamp to widen and heighten the concourse, following the opening of a new entrance at its eastern end.

MTA had to first put in a new support structure for the streets and stadium above before removing the load-bearing beams, said the agency’s head of construction and development.

“We had to remove the previous structural roof and replace it with a secondary structure that supported not only the street, but also Madison Square Garden — all without shutting down 7th Avenue, and all by operating the busiest train station in North America,” remarked Jamie Torres-Springer. “This was a very complicated feat of engineering.”

There are seven head knockers total and the MTA took out the first one last week, the second one Tuesday, and will start lifting out the others this weekend, Torres-Springer said.
Quote:
Construction contractor Skanska is working to raise the ceilings to a uniform 18 feet and widen the walkway from 30 feet to almost double at 57 feet, along with new entrances, stairwells, and elevators to the tracks.

Developer Vornado will be in charge of the new retailers that will line the corridor and the renovation is slated to wrap in March 2023.

Its scope makes up about one fifth of Penn Station and Governor Kathy Hochul and the MTA plan to roll out a facelift for remainder of the maze-like transit hub.

“This is 20% of Penn Station, the other 80% can and will look like this, with these wide capacious corridors, with the room under the ceilings for people to feel comfortable, with the improved entrances,” said Torres-Springer.
Quote:
Hochul’s $6-7 billion proposal is to knock out one or two floors to create a light-filled train hall inside Penn Station along with 8 acres of new public space.

The governor relaunched a slightly scaled back — but still controversial — version of a Cuomo-era 10-tower mega-development around the station in November, which she said is needed to fund the project.

Good government groups have questioned that reasoning and sounded the alarm about a lack of transparency surrounding the deal, demanding more proof to show that the real estate deal is really needed.

Nice. I'm curious as to what the plans are for the old Amtrak waiting area. Is that going to be part of the Penn Station single-level master plan?

They should have had the Knicks there for the removal ceremony.

Not exactly sure how far that will extend.

Work Begins On High Line Moynihan Connector In Midtown West, Manhattan

Quote:
Construction has begun on the High Line Moynihan Connector, a nearly 1,200-foot-long extension of the High Line with a walkway and bridge that will link the elevated park with the Manhattan West development and provide easier access to Moynihan Train Hall and Penn Station. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill collaborated with James Corner Field Operations for the design, which calls for two 600-foot-long bridges built by Turner Construction Company, and work is proceeding under a $50 million public-private partnership between Empire State Development (ESD), Friends of the High Line, and Brookfield Properties. The extension will run along West 30th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues and bend to the north at Dyer Avenue to reach the Manhattan West plaza above West 31st Street.

The Woodland Bridge segment will connect to the High Line and will be populated with a dense landscape of shrubbery and trees thanks to deep soil beds embedded into the structure. The Timber Bridge is the final leg that connects to Manhattan West’s Magnolia Court, and has an open-air truss system made of sustainably sourced wood. This structure will be finished with additional steel decking and bronze handrails.

The High Line Moynihan Connector is expected to be finished in May 2023, as stated on the construction board.

Watching the Rangers dominate Tampa last night made me think how inadequate MSG and Penn are. NY and its teams deserve better. The Dolans are putzes.

A facelift for Penn Station? Govs. Murphy, Hochul make request for proposals

Colleen Wilson
June 9, 2022

Quote:
….. The renovation of Penn, estimated to cost around $7 billion, could include consolidating the concourse waiting area into one level, constructing more escalators, stairwells, elevators and entrances, and connecting Penn and Herald Square with a new underground pedestrian corridor. There are also discussions about repurposing a former taxiway into a glassed-in entrance, according to a Politico report.

This project is one of several proposed as part of a new vision for the area around the train station. The other proposals include:

-Building eight new tracks south of Penn Station for primarily NJ Transit use.

-Constructing 10 new mixed-use buildings that could help pay for the plan.

-Rehabilitating the more than 110-year-old train tunnel under the Hudson River and constructing a new one, as part of the Gateway program.

The New Jersey contingency at Thursday's announcement also emphasized the need to move ahead with the tunnels, or else, as Murphy said, "having a new Penn Station doesn't mean much." A memorandum of understanding between the two states should be announced in the coming weeks to outline how the states will pay for that $12.6 billion project.

“Gov. Hochul and I were discussing the fact that we need to have a sense of urgency around this and we both agree with that," Murphy said. "The MOU and term sheet are the highest priorities and they’re not on the backburner at all."

Lieber, who heads the MTA, said there is urgency to begin construction on Penn Station's renovations because commuter traffic will be relatively low in the coming years. Some Long Island Rail Road trains will begin stopping at Grand Central Station, as part of the long-awaited East Side Access project opening to commuters later this year. In five or six years, some Metro-North trains will stop at Penn Station.

“We must use that window when there are few legs, railroad commuters in Penn Station to really transform it and we’re going to do just that," Lieber said.

New Yorkers deserve a cleaner, more spacious and easier to navigate Penn Station.

And we're doing that with the help of @GovKathyHochul's team. This redevelopment project will be funded through commercial projects and private development.

This is or #EmpireStateMoment

A group- Trains before Towers- is protesting outside Penn Station blasting
@GovKathyHochul for what they are calling a “secretive” redesign process and say the transit system needs to be fixed before more money is spent on a new train hall.

A little information from the RFP, bids are due by the end of next month...

The bids will produce their own renderings of what the rebuilt station would look like, but the conceptual renderings that were released last year give an idea of the openness they are looking for...

With so much construction going on, they should take the opportunity to rebuild Madison Square Garden in the disruption.
