Clara Hughes to be Canada's flagbearer at Opening Ceremony
Quote:
The secret as to who will carry Canada's Olympic flag into B.C. Place stadium for the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver Winter Games has apparently been revealed.
The Toronto Star has reported five-time Olympic medalist long-track speed-skater Clara Hughes will lead Canada's team.
She had turned down the honour to lead the Canadian team into the Winter Games in Turin four years ago.
It caused some controversy but the 37-year-old has said it was because she was sick and she wanted to maintain her strength.
But, this time on our own turf, The Toronto Star has reported Hughes will be the one carrying the flag into B.C. Place exactly two weeks from Friday.
Fan590 morning host Don Landry told 680News it's a no-brainer.
"She's a great choice. She's won medals in the summer and the winter games. She's well-liked, she's charming. As far as I can tell, all Olympians seem to like her and think that she's a really good choice, her name's been kind of floated out there in the last two weeks and I haven't really heard anyone dissenting."
Hughes said she's "looking forward to the opening ceremonies and thinks it would be wild to march in at a Canadian Olympics engulfed by a sea of red and white."
The official announcement is expected in Richmond, B.C. at 5:30 pm ET / 2:30 pm PT and will be carried live on CTVOlympics.ca.

Hopefully the flagbearer curse doesn't rip her apart in the competitions...
