The very impressive gate to Berkeley Square circa 1916.

below: A similar gate or trellis. At first I thought this was Berkeley Square as well.
But the information on this photo was the Alexander Estate, Los Angeles circa 1916.

While trying to find info. on the above photos I came across GaylordWilshire's excellent blog on Berkeley Square.
He has done a beautiful job in bringing that area to life. Everyone should visit it!!

Here are a couple more of the Alexander Estate, Los Angeles.
In all honesty, I can't place this estate.

Great pics, ethereal! I really like the Berkeley Square gate. Too bad it couldn't have been preserved-- if not the neighborhood, at least the gate.

-------------------------

Some Pasadena then-and-nows--- or now-and-thens.

The Forever 21 store in Old Pasadena, August 20, 2011. It became a Forever 21 some years ago, after being vacant for some time after a boutique Saks Fifth Avenue that was in this building, closed. The Saks had only been in business for about 4 years or so, during the 2000s. When I first moved to the area in the late 1990s, this building was a vacant, run-down auto body repair garage.

The same building, circa 1930s. I knew it was originally a garage, but I had no idea that it was an open building with gas pumps until I saw this photo.

Pasadena Collection

Corner of Memorial Park in Old Pasadena, August 20, 2011. You can see the ruins of a building, an old entrance arch, which is fenced off because it is structurally unsound.

Corner of Memorial Park, circa 1890. The building was Pasadena's main public library, built in a Romanesque style. Construction started in the 1880s and was completed and opened in 1890; it served as Pasadena's main library until 1927, when a more "modern" (actually Spanish-Mediterranean Revival) library was built in the then-new civic center, east of what is now called Old Town Pasadena. The building was condemned as unsafe after the Long Beach Earthquake of 1933, and was finally razed in 1954.

USC Archive

The entrance arch was reconstructed in 1955 and was dedicated "...to the memory of Pasadena pioneers who in early and difficult days, established here a public library as an expression of reverence for literature and art..."

Excellent post sopas_ej!
That Firestone garage-gas station was a thing of functional beauty. It's actually quite wonderful in it's latest incarnation as well.
I am glad they saved the entrance to the old library.

Police Woman?

Hi, everyone. I'm from upstate NY, but I have always had a passion for LA, or really any city with "lost" neighborhoods. My own city has areas that were once rich with culture and history and architectural gems that are now parking lots, tattoo parlors, and dollar stores. I was curious about the pic of the detectives, originally posted last year by gsjansen. It looks as if the window on the left says "Police Woman". Any idea the reason? (I kinda doubt it was an Angie Dickinson reference!) Please forgive me if this doesn't post properly. I'm a newbie!

Welcome to the thread Albany_NY. Wow I never noticed the 'Police Woman' sign. It's certainly a mystery to me; perhaps gsjansen can answer your question.

below: Here is a wonderfully atmospheric 'noirish' photograph.

los angeles public library

The photograph shows the Beck Hotel and Apartments at 7th & Francisco Street.
If you look closely, the street sign says 7th Place as opposed to 7th Street.....and yet 7th Place is nowhere near Figueroa.
(the sign atop the building at left says 'figueroa building')
So is this location correct?

I thought it's about time I post some newfound LAPL images myself. ^^

I don't recall seeing this view of "my" Post Office before. It looks almost brand spanking new here...

LAPL/Herald-Examiner Collection

Or this one, from 1937, soon before it was razed. Prior to this, I did not know that the block immediately north of the old Post Office was demolished before the P.O. itself (far right). Several historically important buildings are also visible on the east side of Main Street here. There's the Baker Block (1877) at far left. The streetlight pole just left of center points directly to the almost impossibly old Bella Union Hotel. It was first constructed as a single-storey residence c.1835. In succession, it subsequently became the last capitol of Alta California, the county's first courthouse, and the city's first hotel. To the immediate left of the Bella Union is the Pico Building, built in 1868, two years before the Pico House. (Thanks to Brian Hsu's Urban Diachrony blog for that I.D.)

Sigh

The best close-up I have seen of the ill-fated Castle and Salt Box. They are being moved from 3rd & Hope to Heritage Square.

Unbelievable! Talk about moderne - that store looks like it could be from 2032 as much as 1932!

Another image I'd never seen on the LAPL site before - this kind of quirky WPA mural from the 1939 Federal Building at Temple and Main.

This is actually a composite of two LAPL images. I realize it's not a perfect photostitch, but it's the best I could do.

LAPL here and here

*chuckle* so-cal-bear should understand why I find this artwork to be particularly intriguing.

I wonder if the mural's still there. When I visit L.A. again in September, I will have to take a look. I'm curious to see what the the soldiers are pointing up at! The one ground sloth seems to be looking up at it, too. ^^
