Several projects are taking shape downtown....
1. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Power and Light Building has been greenlit to be transformed into luxury apartments. This will revitalize a historical landmark, currently an eyesore which has been the subject of several failed project ideas, including an adjoining tower for a convention center hotel. Nevertheless, I like this plan, and just to the north of the P&L Building sits an empty lot which will become a parking garage, wrapped up in more apartments.
2. The Commerce Tower (6th pic from the bottom) is now about 90% vacant. The onetime office building built in 1965 is also being transformed into apartments in the next couple of years.
3. One block south of the Town Pavilion, (5th pic from bottom) a brand new 24 story apartment tower is being erected
4. On the west side of the downtown loop are two more brand new apartment buildings totaling almost 400 units that won 25 year property tax abatements. Not sure when ground will be broken...
5. If you noticed any construction in a couple of the pictures, that's where the new KC Streetcar rail line will be laid...hopefully will start carrying passenger by 2016.
All of these projects are within the Downtown Loop, which is only part of downtown. Another part just south of the Loop is the Crossroads District, which is less dense and fewer highrise buildings, but more apartments are underway. Things are definitely looking up!!
