Driving up Broadway in the google-mobile I spotted a small sign in the back of a parking lot. Hmmm...what does it say? It looks like...
gsv
I couldn't believe my eyes. The sign does indeed say
GIRLS!
gsv
-actually, it says
GIRLS dance.

Since the views from google-mobile are obviously limited , I drove over to Spring Street to try and get a better look.
As far as I could tell, the sign is on the back wall of 833 S. Spring Street.
gsv
On front of 833 S. Spring there's an even better sign, a large vertical
DANCING girls sign.

time for some tuck pointing.
I noticed that something was engraved above the front entrance so I zeroed in.
City something,
clob?...or
Club...maybe.
Notice the reverse side of the alley (GIRLS) sign is visible at right towards the back of the building.
In this aerial I've outlined the '
Dancing Girls' building, 833 S. Spring, in red. The old Avolon Ballroom site is outlined in yellow (there was a small parking lot in between).

In this vintage view, 833 S. Spring Street is on the right.
ocdom
At this point in time the Avodon Ballroom building is still an Auto Park, and there's a small building where the parking lot will be.

Armed with 'City Club' as search words, I eventually located

The blog had excellent information on 833 S. Spring Street.

833 South Spring Street was built in 1924 as the headquarters of the City Club, a Los Angeles civic organization with a membership of 2500 leaders of business, industry, and finance. But after less than 10 years, the City Club was gone. For the next 60 years it was home to numerous taxi-dancehalls.

In this view,
Los Angeles City Club is still painted on the south wall of 833 S. Spring. (just below the 5 globe street light)
LAPL
City Club no more, now it's the
Roseland Roof, circa 1939. (notice 'Roof' within the arched front entrance)

Eventually the
City Club/Roseland Roof became the
41 Club,
The Swanky, and the
833 Club.
as the
