2DEFINE Architecture Wins Yingkou Convention Center

International architect Marshall Strabala, who heads 2DEFINE Architecture and is best known for designing three of the world's tallest buildings, has won another major design assignment.

2DEFINE Architecture has been selected to design the Yingkou Convention and Exposition Center, a US$68 million facility to be situated on a man-made island in the Bohai Sea, off the coast of the Chinese port city of Yingkou.

The sea urchin-shaped facility will boast many green features, including a rain screen system on the roof that allows in natural light to minimize the need for artificial light. The four-story, 70,000-square-meter Center also will have a half-acre rooftop terrace, 25,000-square meter contiguous exhibtion hall, 5,100- square-meters of meeting rooms, two seafood restaurants, a 900-seat banquet hall, a 200-fixed seat auditorium, and outdoor garden and promenade spaces. With its 360-degree views, the oblong-shaped facility will provide excellent views.

The Center will be the centerpiece of a new harbor created off of a satellite central business district in the port city. Yingkou is a fast-growing city of 2.4 million people located in the northeastern province of Liaoning. 2DEFINE will work on the project with the Dalian Urban Planning and Design Institute which will serve as national partner and be the architect of record

Strabala has previously designed the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center in Hong Kong, which has some similarities to the Yingkou facility. And, he is the client's Chief Architect for the Shanghai Tower, China's tallest building now under construction in Shanghai. He also designed the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building in Dubai, UAE, and the Nanjing Zifeng Tower, the world's eighth tallest buiding, in Nanjing, China, while he was with SOM.
