A new rental development has opened its doors in Whitehorse

Boreal Commons has opened its doors in Whitehorse.

The 87-unit housing project in Whistle Bend will help address rental housing needs in the territory, providing more affordable and accessible units, according to a statement from the federal and Yukon governments and the Right On Property Group.

Three multi-residential buildings were constructed, each with four bachelor suites, four one-bedroom units and 21 two-bedroom units.

A total of 18 units are affordable, meaning they have below market rents, the statement said. Of those, 10 units will be prioritized for young adults between 18–25 years of age and newcomers to Canada... (snip)

Yukon population rises to within touching distance of NWT

I wonder if Yukon will ever make a push for province-hood. It’s certainly the most accessible / habitable territory and will likely be the largest quite soon.

I can't see Yukon making that move. There would be more negatives to it right now. Say if places like Old Crow had all weather road access that could push the burden to the Federal level . after that maybe.

As of today 1/4 of the NWT population has be displaced due to wild fires. Enterprise may be lost. High Level, Ft Smith are on Evacuation alert. Yellowknife is now on watch as a fire is 30kms north. Ft Macs population just increased a few thousand over night.

Yup its a phased evacuation but still may take up to 24hrs to get to Edmonton. Evac centres are now opening up as far as Red Deer. The one not to far from my house in St Albert was full by late afternoon.

There is also a Federal Cabinet meeting on right now about this.

Everything closer has already been filled by evacuees from Hay River and Fort Smith. It's an unprecedented disaster but hopefully no more communities are lost.

I think Cape Breton Island, Northern Ontario, and Vancouver Island are more likely to be their own provinces than the territories, at least in this century.

Yah West Kelowna got it bad.

Still YK could be hit, They just got a breather for now.

Talked with a guy on Sunday that was in Ft Simpson. They had to leave because all the people coming in from evacuation zones. Took 6 days to arrange a flight to Edmonton.
Any work north of 60 is on hold right now. No flights going north ( at least none taking people through the hub at YK airport.) Flights north May be by Passing and going Right to Inuvik. Air Canada and West jet are all canceled north. Kelowna and Penticton are also canceled. Canadian North is only showing delays.

It is looking like Hay River is going to experience a substantial structural loss tonight and tomorrow. Firefighting crews have evacuated Hay River because of a big blowback as hot and windy weather returns to the Great Slave Lake region.
