The 2nd Avenue overpass over the railroad tracks is well under way. It will start from 15th street and pass over the tracks to the North. Then, travel between Coleman Coliseum and the Law School and connect to Paul Bryant Drive just East of the Baseball stadium.

Also, I'm hearing that, since plans for the new Amtrak railroad station that was to be built in Alberta City have fallen through because of "sightline" problems, the city and the University are considering building it at the new overpass on the South side of the tracks. The University bought the Dollar General property when getting ready for the overpass and may be willing to donate that property if the city of Tuscaloosa will commit to building the new train station there. More info on that at a later date.

Thanks for the updates Packer. I had heard that the "entrance" bridge to Tuscaloosa over McFarland was delayed a few months. It originally was supposed to finish in July before the football season. That would have been nice, but that is the life of 20/59.

I read where the first arch, that was installed several months ago, was either twisted slightly during installation or at the plant before delivery. Brasfield -Gorrie, the contractor, and the steel fabrication plant are battling it out over responsibility. They are trying to decide whether it should be replaced or repaired. Hopefully, that will get worked out soon and the bridge finished. When finally finished, the drive from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa will be much safer and a really nice trip. There is so much truck traffic on that stretch that 6 lanes is absolutely necessary.

Looks like UA has a new Vice President, Provost. I'm not sure what happened to the one he is replacing Kevin Whitaker. The new guy is a Pharmacy guy. I wish UA had a pharmacy school. Any way we can get more doctoral students to the University is a good thing in my book.

I believe this hire proves that Dr. Bell is serious about dramatically increasing research activity on the Tuscaloosa campus. More research means more prestige, more jobs, and more dollars for the University. I'm looking forward to UA making that next step . I have advocated for the Board of Trustees to buy Druid City Hospital and convert it into a research hospital (University Hospital in Tuscaloosa). Therefore, the portion of UASOM that is in Tuscaloosa could be expanded and the UA campus could increase it's medical research (NIH funding). UA could build medical research buildings between the Law School and the hospital that have a connection to the hospital. UAB and UA could collaborate and compliment each other very well.

I expected a drop in the total enrollment, but, we didn't compromise quality for numbers. Average GPA for entering fresh went up to 3.83 (from 3.77) and, again, 40% had ACT scores of 30 or hgher. But, I'm most happy with the increase in graduate students to an all-time high of 5,730. UA plans to add 10,000 more graduate students over the next few years and this is a great start. Also, another great crop of National Merit Scholars (221). ROLL TIDE FOREVER!!!!
