Historic London

Welcome to my Historic London thread. These incredible photographs. Focusing on London, they show the havoc wreaked by the Luftwaffe on the city. it also shows the city before the war.

Wow, how did St. Pauls survive all that carpet bombing? I think its interesting how in Europe what was lost was due to war, here in the states our cities were destroyed by us.

It was the fires caused by incendiary devices that caused most of the damage around St. Paul's, not explosions.

Excellent thread Jamie. I was not aware that London had been damaged to the extent you show in these pictures. The core districts certainly got hit to a high degree. It is easier to understand the infill of newer buildings in the central districts from the 50's 60's and onward when you bear witness to such documents. Sad really.

the east end of london and most of the areas surrounding the docks were very heavily hit! my grandads first wife and his 2 daughters were killed in canning town when a doodlebug rocket hit their house.
