Hideg House

Focusing on sculptural cliffs and friendly hillside woods, Hideg House, designed by Béres Architects, is an unusual object in the landscape of the outskirts of Kőszeg, a charming historical town in Hungary.

The site had been used as a quarry a few centuries ago, so the exposed rock face was one of the strongest elements of the environment.

In order to get enough direct sunlight all-year-long and to stay close to the sculptural cliffs, the building had been placed about 10 meters above the road that runs along the bottom of the valley.

RUFproject | Gulf Islands Residence
in Architecture by editor — 12:00 pm | December 20, 2013

RUFproject | Gulf Islands ResidenceThe design of this Gulf Islands’ private residence responds to the Client’s brief for the creation a ‘modern log cabin’ on a precious 3.1 acre piece of ocean-front property. The Client was torn between the idea of the rustic Canadian log cabin and the desire for a glass house. Through the use of a highly expressive structure, expanses of glass and a simple & minimal material palette the project took this challenge as it’s fundamental concept, striving to reconcile the rustic with the modern in its form, materiality and organization.

Impressive Dream Home in Singapore by a-dlab

Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Now this is something you don't see every day. This modern home is definitely something that you can't miss while passing by, even though Singapore is full of impressive homes like this. This dream home is called Andrew Road Residence and it's designed by a-dlab.

Andrew Road residence is a 650 square meter dream home, built this year (2013) for one lucky family. Property is located in famous central Singapore, overlooking the MacRitchie Reservoir, Singapore's oldest reservoir. Story behind the shape of this impressive dream home is quite interesting. According to the architects, terrain is quite undulating with the highway behind the house. All this creates unwanted noise, so architects had to think outside the box to solve this issue and offer peaceful and calm home atmosphere.

Entrance with covered parking lot is located on the street level while rest of the house is sunken and adjusted to the terrain. All this defined impressive shape of this home which is something I like the most here. Besides green roofs and overall landscape design around the house, I would like to say I definitely adore those glass walls which could easily be completely closed with wooden blinds, hidden swimming pool and terrace which can only be seen from the air and bridges connecting separated parts of this dream home.

Stunning Arborg House is Covered in Icelandic Moss

by Ana Lisa Alperovich, 12/31/13

A modern glazed home with stunning views stands on a mossy hill in Iceland. Designed by PK Arkitektar, the Árborg House is a single storey vacation shelter made from local wood and clad in concrete mixed with gravel from a nearby river. Made with incredible attention to detail, the home is covered with moss carefully removed to build the house that was then kept, nursed and replanted!

Located two hours drive from Reykjavik, the Árborg House stands on a hill above the glacial valley of Hvita river. Its exteriors are clad in long lasting hardwearing concrete with vertical lines and mixed with gravel from the river below. The interiors, however, are minimal yet warm and covered with local teak boards that hide plenty of storage spaces.

Fairly simple, but this renovation + addition results in a rather elegant and clever adaptation of a typical 1940s suburban Toronto house.

Long before I knew what “architecture” was, I came across an illustration – I think it was for Ontario Hydro – of the back of a house with the exterior wall removed, so you could see into all the brightly-lit rooms, hallways and staircases, dollhouse style. I must have stared at this thing for weeks, my childhood mind placing me into those spaces, interacting, relaxing and just generally playing grown-up.

So, even today, when I’m able to see a real house exposed like that, it sends a chill up my spine.

Such is the case in North Toronto, where a house designed by architects Kevin Bridgman and Paulo Rocha, and built by high-end builder Eisner Murray, leaves nothing to the imagination for folks lucky enough to get an invitation into the backyard: chairs, lamps, artwork, fireplace and the second-floor master bedroom are all there, ready to fire the imagination.

fl architetti construct casa y in the hills of turin

tucked away in the picturesque hills of turin, italian firm fl architetti has completed a single family residence for a couple and their three children. responding to the client’s need for durability and low maintenance, the architects have designed a concrete structure with two visually contrasting forms: one defined by the same concrete and glass, and the other by a thin screen of corten slats that diffuse direct light and open in large sections to create semi-private exterior zones outside of each bedroom.

park + associates: mimosa house in singapore

the design brief was laid out clearly by the client: a ‘double volume living space, 4 bedrooms, reuse as much of the existing structure as possible.’ local practice park + associates responded with a new construction that replaces the existing house of burnt orange brick. the new mimosa house is a three dimensional composition of planes and boxes rendered in carefully considered materials.

Sengokubara Residence

The 2‐storey wood structure residence is situated on a flag pole shaped site, 30m square in plan with a 15m diameter interior courtyard. With the main living room centered on the interior courtyard, all spaces are arranged in a radial manner from the entrance. The 8 sliding doors separating the main living room and interior courtyard can be opened at any time so that the space can be used as one. The structure is made up of wooden columns and beams, which are 75mm x 350mm L‐shaped pieces, also arranged in a radial manner, creating a large one way sloped roof. The large roof varies in height, achieving ceiling heights between 2.4m to 7.5m.

Denis-Ortmans House
Dethier Architecture

The design for the Denis-Ortmans house arose from discussions concerning the scope of possibilities for single-family dwellings that respect the rules of sustainable development. We used cutting-edge technology to create a structure that was economical and environmentally friendly, provided a comfortable living space, and which reflected an informed approach to contemporary design.

Corte Rustica a Montecchio Veronese
Restauro e ristrutturazione di un complesso di antica origine
Mario Bellavite
January 27, 2014

The intervention involves all the buildings that make up the ancient rural settlement called “Costa del Buso” located on the ridge that connects Montecchio di Negrar with Quinzano: it is a complex of buildings forming the nucleus of a farm built in the seventeenth century. at the sinkhole from which the name originated. The project involves the redevelopment of the complex architectural and environmental, with differentiated interventions for the different parts that constitute it in respect of the original characters of incorporation, limiting the interventions “contemporary” to portions of the building of recent construction.
