Tigh Port na Long by Dualchas Architects

The southernmost tip of Scotland's Isle of Skye is the setting for this small wooden house by local firm Dualchas Architects (+ slideshow).

The single-storey house was designed by Dualchas Architects as the holiday home for an English family, who have been visting the island for years and wanted a more permanent base.

jacobsen arquitetura's MDT house is wrapped in warm teak skin

a slatted teak facade wraps around the glazed volume of MDT house by brazilian firm jacobsen arquitetura. embedded into a rolling emerald-colored hill in sao paulo, the house's central plan allows for the creation of three open patios that organize a relaxed, domestic program. the richly grained, warm-hued wood creates a network of verandas that delineate intimate spaces, social lounges and direct access to a variety of gardens.

sean godsell's edward street house sports grated metal skin

located 4 km from melbourne's central business district, the 'edward street house' by sean godsell architects is a site-hugging home for for a musician and artist couple as well as their three children. nestled into the city's dense residential fabric and seemingly limited by zoning and historical protection laws, the home's single-family programming provided opportunities for creative use of the site.

Totan Kuzembaev Architectural Studio | Fan House
in Architecture by editor — 6:22 pm | July 8, 2013

The architectural collection of the resort “Pirogovo” was once again replenished with a house named “Fan” designed by Totan Kuzembaev workshop and built on the bank of the Klyazma lake. The house took its name from the main glazed façade facing the lake– the architects gave it a peculiar smoothly curved shape, thus at the most exposing the terraces and the inner rooms to the surrounding landscape. On its other side, the cottage is split in two: the front of the building is divided for the sake of preserving the few pines that spread deep into the lot. The quaint broken form of the plan and the smooth line of the main façade are perhaps the only elements the authors let their fantasy play with.

Southlands Residence Deftly Straddles an Urban Oasis in Vancouver
by Bridgette Meinhold, 06/26/13

A neglected bungalow in Vancouver's historic Dunbar-Southlands neighborhood was recently replaced with the Southlands Residence, a modern home that takes full advantage of its lush surroundings. Located on a irregular lot with a natural stream running right through the middle of it, the new home rests on the foundation of the former residence. Designed by DIALOG, the two-story home deftly straddles the urban oasis and elevates its status to a natural wonder all while enjoying a close connection from inside the home.

jacobsen arquitetura's BV house stretches over the landscape

BV house by jacobsen arquitetura was embedded in an expanse of land, surrounded by golf courses and was designed as a weekend retreat for a family from são paulo. a widespread single-story house was chosen to take advantage of the lands amplitude and visual landscapes at a distance, such as lakes and mountain ranges. a large occupancy of the land was explored, encouraging residents and visitors to take full advantage of the whole property. the house is divided into blocks each having a specific function.

Before & After: From Public Restroom to Home Sweet Home

I've long admired the ingenuity of Londoners when it comes to small spaces. Their storied city of eight million has housing prices even higher than New York's, which means crafty Londoners often have to squeeze in wherever they can. (Case in point: this 77 square foot apartment on the market a few years ago for $335K.) But young architect Laura Clark really takes the cake. She's managed to create a beautiful home — out of a public restroom.

Portable Prefab Pod Home: Compact, Minimal & Modern

Like cramped yacht cabins, many tiny homes try to cram too much into a small space – this design focuses instead on simplicity and essentials, resulting in a spacious-feeling minimalist interior.

I so enjoyed going thru their entire thread, can't thank you all enough!

Question: With all the money in Malibu, Beverly Hills and the Hollywood Hills, why aren't there more amazing homes shown from that area of the world? Or are architects restricted there by HOA's, they must go through a design process?
