graz-based architecture firm 'atelier thomas pucher' have begun construction on their international first prize design of the 'amstetten school campus', located in amstetten, austria. the development combines two existing secondary schools into one central location with a new music school and gymnasium. the compact five-storey cube creates a distinctive landmark to the surrounding area comprising of two lower volumes and three courtyards within a chessboard formation. the main concept behind the formal design is the creation of a variety of spaces that can organize the functions of the building.

new york city-based tod williams billie tsien architects, have completed the 'reva and logan center for the arts', a new campus building for the university of chicago in chicago, illinois. rising above the urban landscape like a silo, an eleven-storey tower permeated with light will offer views to the landmark skyline while marking the entrance to the performing arts center. the structure's multiple levels will contain terraces and rooftop decks as well as spaces for interdisciplinary experimentation.

oh yeah I didn't notice that there's no railing there... maybe they're going to add one. otherwise I would say stone tiles make an expensive roofing material.

I think you're a bit fooled by the picture. It's just a standard roofing membrane...nothing special. It appears to have rained recently and is reflecting light. It's not occupiable space so no railings are necessary, and I'm not sure what you mean by "stone tiles" since there isn't any visible in the shot. The roof doesn't appear to be draining like it should. The picture isn't flattering, in fact it's kind of scary.

I think he was joking... but for the record, I was referring to the ponding on the roof.

That's a ton of extra weight for the structure to bear and even a well-installed roof membrane can have tiny flaws that can quickly become big ones if there is standing water.
