Which of those is the cheapest?

I was on the back deck with my dad at my parents' house when a flight from Houston to Dubai went overhead.

Just before covid crippled the world last spring, Qantas was right on the cusp of launching Brisbane to Chicago non-stop, which would be 8,925 miles, but alas, it got delayed.

We'll see if it ever comes back whenever we're fully on the other side.

Considering that Brisbane will host the Olympics in 2032, probably.

My wife flew from IAH to Sydney. What a horrible flight. Longest I've been was IAH to Tokyo and that was hellacious.

The longest flight I have taken is LAX to Guangzhou on China Southern, 14.5 hours.

If India is open and safe(r) from COVID next February, I'm thinking of taking Air India from SFO to Delhi, which would be two hours longer.

When I traveled from LA to Singapore in 2019, I went through Seoul. I was SO happy to break up the journey a little bit-- walk around, grab a coffee, stretch...and then get on the flight from Seoul to Singapore. For domestic flights, I absolutely want a direct. But super long distance trips? I'm happy to break it up a bit.

Agreed. Anything over 8 or 9 hours is really just pushing it. Only way i was able to fly to Seoul from LA without any issues was because i was incredibly high on some edibles for the first 5 hours of the flight and i passed out

I've only been on two flights over 6,000mi (SFO-TPE and PVG-SFO). That's about my limit (LAX-LHR isn't short either). I cannot imagine being on a plane much longer than 12 hours. I would much rather hop on either end.

For domestic though? Fuck changing planes. Gimme direct or I fly to the nearest hub and drive.

The pandemic has probably set back the SYD-JFK Qantas project at least five years. I'm on the fence about whether I would ever fly it, but definitely not while in coach. But this route will probably be limited to business class or above whenever it does go in service:

Quote:
QANTAS’ NEW YORK TO SYDNEY NON-STOP RESEARCH FLIGHT SET FOR TAKE-OFF

Qantas’ first Project Sunrise research flight is set to take off from New York to Sydney this evening.

Qantas Flight 7879, with 50 passengers and crew on board, will depart New York’s John F Kennedy Airport at 9pm New York as the first commercial airline to fly non-stop between New York and Sydney.

The 787-9 aircraft has been positioned to New York after being delivered from the Boeing factory in Seattle. After the research flight is complete, it will enter normal commercial service with Qantas.

The purpose of the record-breaking flight is to conduct scientific research on passengers and crew on an ultra-long haul flight, with the aim of increasing health and wellness, minimising jetlag and identifying optimum crew rest and work periods.

It is part of Qantas’ ongoing quest to launch commercial flights between the east coast of Australia (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) and New York and London. The direct flights would save passengers up to four hours in total travel time and follow the successful Perth-London route, which started in March 2018 and is the only direct link between Australia and Europe.

While not designed for the 16,200 kilometre (10,200 mile) journey from New York to Sydney, the 787-9 being used for today’s research flight will take off with maximum fuel and a restricted passenger and baggage load (and no cargo) to allow the aircraft to operate the flight non-stop. All carbon emissions from this flight, and two additional research flights from New York and London to Sydney in November and December, will be offset.

Airbus and Boeing have pitched aircraft (the A350 and 777X respectively) with the range to operate Project Sunrise flights on a commercial basis. These pitches, together with findings from the research flights and other streams of work, will form part of a business case being developed by Qantas to inform a final yes/no decision on Project Sunrise expected by the end of this year. If approved, flights would start in 2022/23.

Qantas has named its endeavor “Project Sunrise” after the airline’s historic ‘Double Sunrise’ endurance flights during the Second World War, which remained airborne long enough to see two sunrises.

LOL good call on the edibles. I took a muscle relaxer right before takeoff, put on a boring documentary, and passed the hell out for...6 hours or so. Woke up and watched a movie and a couple episodes of a show, and I was in Seoul.

First international flight (to London) my grandmother said "here take this" at the airport. I did, passed out and woke up over Scotland. 'This' turned out to be Valium.

I've taken the Singapore to Newark flight in their Premium Economy cabin. For an 18 hour flight it wasn't bad at all, much better than having a layover.

I suddenly feel very isolated. Poor us, just about every major international destination is 5,000+ miles away from the Bay Area.

JFK and LAX are obviously the top, and I suspect Newark is probably 3rd but I'll do those 3 later.

Anyhow,

Some observations so far.
*Honolulu to Boston is the longest US flight I could find
*Honolulu has the only US flight to Kuala Lumpur
*Dulles has a listed flight to Johannesburg but it stops in Accra.
*Houston has a listed flight to Singapore but it stops in Manchester

Off the top of my head, DTW has at least three +5,000 non-stops: Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai. MSP probably also goes to those three.

ETA: Six for Detroit: Tokyo, Osaka, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Amman*. Two for Minneapolis: Tokyo, Seoul.

*Service between Detroit and Amman is ending in August 2021.

The Vancouver-Sydney flight is...brutal. It seemed like it lasted 20 days. It is depressing realizing that, after having watched 5 movies back-to-back, you are still only half way there.

Still better than my previous trip of having to deplane in Honololu (at 3am) and having to go through US Customs for no good reason, just to get right back on the same fucking plane in the same fucking seat.

I did DFW to Sydney once and had to stop in Brisbane to refuel, which added a few hours (and a crew change!). Sadly people going to Gold Coast were required to stay on board, though people going to Brisbane were allowed to deplane.

And they lost my luggage and barely got it in CHC before my ice flight to McMurdo, otherwise I would have had a really bad time.

Flight Connections is a helpful tool for seeing long non-stops from a given airport.

Years ago I flew the then NONSTOP Singapore to Newark on Singapore Airlines (19 hours); all business class and it was quite an experience, but was actually quite pleasant. Singapore Air is really superb, otherwise such a trip could be most unpleasant. I can't imagine such a trip in economy; I have experienced many economy trips just across the Atlantic and it is a real pain, particularly on the way to Europe; back is not so bad as you can crash at home.
