I admit it: I had to Google "rat slab".

For anyone else as ignorant as I:

Quote:
A rat slab is a very thin layer of non-structural concrete poured over the dirt floor of a basement or crawlspace. As the name implies, it is intended primarily to prevent the intrusion of pests into the area below a building.

Also known as a mud slab, yeah. It just provides a nice flat, stable area to place rebar on. Obviously its not for keeping out pests in this case

I've got a rat slab going on in a house in Pismo Beach right now! Contractor had to explain it to the homeowner as well....

I've only heard it once, when my architect was discussing my basement floor with a contractor. I exclaimed, "It's not working!"

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the rat slab, I tend to over think it and want to put rebar or at least wire mesh in the concrete to limit cracking. Its really only intended to cover the dirt and keep it clean...

All we need is photo evidence to have this switched from a proposal to construction.

It's U/C my friend works right next door and has a pretty good view, he's been doing a time lapse with his Snapchat haha. Concrete has been poured on the entire site that's been excavated.
