Some comments:
  • The first three or four pictures from top are of 17th Street, which is also the part of Dupont that I live in (just moved from Ballston, for those of you keeping score at home).
  • Your third picture from top shows the Cairo apartment building, which is notorious. It is the reason DC has a height limit. When it was built in 189x, proto-NIMBYs flipped out and got Congress to enact the height limit. It is to this day the tallest residential building in the District (it is 164 feet).
  • The building that you say you adore near the zoo is very interesting. Half of it is new! When the owner wanted to expand his historic building, he pulled out the original plans and expanded according to them. Every detail of the new section matches the old section exactly. It is a bona-fide contemporary art-deco building.
  • Some of the pictures from Friendship Heights are actually in Maryland.

Excuse my ignorance but are structures like these:

Actually old? Or just built to look old? If theyre actually old Im impressed at how clean and well kept the entire city looks, it almost seems as if everything that was built pre WW2 is still in mint condition (from these photos anyhow).

Anywho, very beautiful shots and streets.

I never thought you'd move from Ballston to DC. Any special reason for the move?

Hoover: Generally speaking they are actually old. I can spot one or two in these pictures that are new, but for the most part the rowhouses in this thread are vintage 19th Century (the Dupont neighborhood dates to the era immediately after the Civil War).

Ex-Ith: I lived in Ballston because I worked in Fairfax and didn't want to spend half my life commuting. I now work inside the Beltway, so the reason I didn't live in the District for several years no longer applies.

I was always impressed how massive and super clean DC's Metro is.

In comparison to Boston's T, DC Metro was just so modern and beautiful.

Looks like an awesome place! A part of DC I've never been to. I really like all the rooftop murals and the brightly painted buildings. In your 5th picture down, are those single-family homes? They're gorgeous.

Probably, although they could be split up into apartments (as many in the neighborhood are).

Thanks for bringing this thread back; I somehow missed it the first time. Anyhoo, great shots, OhioGuy! I can see why you like Dupont Circle so much, it looks like an amazing neighborhood. I hope to visit one day myself.

Fantastic thread. It really does a great job of showcasing NWDC. This area was my home for many years.
