That horrible Michigan castle must have been developed by the same people who designed this:

Wouldn't want to live there, but that is a bold statement.

I hate to slag people (hopefully none of them posts here!) but, the architecture firm's work is... uninspiring:

Wow. The Novosibirsk Hilton?

Just looked it up, this is in Kalingrad (fmr Königsberg). This epic monstrosity was built on the site of Königsberg Castle. I guess the postwar Soviets REALLY wanted to erase any remains of the decadent West.

I worship, love, adore raw concrete in buildings, I just want to go up and give buildings like this a big kiss! To me, raw concrete is beautiful! Far better than stucco! I just love the emanation of solidity! A building like this will be around another 200-300 years.

Interestingly, Stantec, a pretty substantial A&E firm, has an office in there. Apparently, it's pretty modernized on the inside, and it's still the largest commercial office building in Tucson. Completed in 1975 it is 261,000 SF & 16 stories. The annual "Climb for the Fallen" charity event sounds fun.

I don't live too far from that building in Tucson, it has cool blue light at the top of the tower and I can see the lights from the street I live on. I expect one day it will be converted into a condo tower.

Another entry for the west side of Michigan -

Does the former Steelcase HQ in Grand Rapids count? I've never been able to decide if I love this building or hate it. It's near the airport here on google maps. It really does sit in the middle of a field next to the highway, but surrounded by sprawl -

Here's a photo of it vacant, after Steelcase moved out -

Source: Atlas Obscura

And here's what it looks like now, with its current tenant - Switch (a secure data center) - moved in -

This one was a literal eye sore for many years and the first to come to mind. Funded by "religous" donations, it sat partially completed for a long time.

I hated it at first, but kinda love it now. It's well done in it's cheese. And washed up 80's hard rock superstars is exactly the vibe you get on a Friday night.

This is a mostly harmless casino hotel, but the fact that it sits on the literal edge of the everglades means it's a landmark that you can see for miles into the wilderness.

Oak Brook Terrace Tower always reminded me of the puzzlingly isolated faux-Jahn of my youth, "the green weenie" standing out amidst the sprawly expanse south of Durham, N.C.

(from Google Earth)

University Tower | 356 ft. | 17 floors | 1986

Not only were they born in the same year and almost share the same address (Tower Blvd), they were both completed before their obvious inspiration, Liberty Place in Philadelphia (1987 / 1990). I guess that "the weenie" was built by a Dallas developer, which seems about right

About the only reason why I could imagine building something so out-of-place now is for a hospital. Construction costs must've been way cheaper back then. Also, I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to work there and be able to see the Starbucks, but never be able to walk to it...

I guess "goofy one-off hotel" would be another valid rationale. Hotels have high fire code standards, so why not go vertical? And all kinds of seemingly arbitrary hotel locations are rooted in, oh I don't know, Bureau of Indian Affairs determinations of reservation boundaries.

My other favorite Carolinas example is the abandoned-before-it-opened, 21-story Heritage USA Hotel in Fort Mill, S.C., arbitrary location determined by Jeebus and/or his philandering messenger:

https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/heritage-usa-2

The megachurch at its base is still in use, under new leadership, and a few small buildings that were at the entrance are still there. Most of the circa-1978 Christian amusement park has been demolished and redeveloped into conventional townhouses.

Speaking of televangelists...

OMG, currently listed at $14 PSF (per year). That's like warehouse rent! Has to be the cheapest 50th-floor+ office in the USA.

^ Wow I love that building. I have a huge soft spot for futurist architecture and design. While they can be cheesy, at least buildings like this one in Grand Rapids were aspirational. Can't say the same for many of today's buildings.

Low ceilings (designed as a hospital), obscured windows due to the exterior paneling, small and inefficient floor plates and location basically in a suburban neighborhood are detrimental factors. And Tulsa's office market isn't the best even for prime downtown real estate.

Student housing for ORU students across the street would be a cool retrofit.
