No Olympics, thank you. At this point any rational actor is aware of how corrupt the IOC and it's affiliates are, and how useless the Olympics have become in terms of truly helping improve infrastructure and the people's needs.

Montreal is expanding its transit system and is exploding with private and publicly funded development, and all this without shady deals with crooked overseas organizations.

International Olympic Committee announces Brisbane as preferred host for 2032 Summer Olympic Games

""The commission based on this decision will start more detailed discussions with the Brisbane 2032 committee and the Australian Olympic Committee about their potential to host the Olympic Games 2032."

The IOC will now move discussions to a targeted dialogue followed by final negotiations with the city then elected at a future IOC session, likely within the next year.

If those discussions are successful from both sides and Brisbane meets the requirements then it will be named the host city and Brisbane would become the third Australian city to host the Summer Games after Melbourne (1956) and Sydney (2000).

...

"The reason for us recommending the Brisbane project is they are a very advanced project and there are a number of criteria that sit really well with us," Ms Aasen said.

"The high level of expertise in hosting major international sports events, the favourable climate conditions in July and August.

"The existing and planned transport infrastructure and experience in traffic management which can adequately meet the demands of the Olympic Games and were successfully implemented for the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

"The existing hotel inventory, which also meets the Games requirements.""

The IOC tends not to hold subsequent Olympics on the same continent.

2036 or 2040 at the earliest for a Summer bid.

Seems to be so early to be announcing a preferred city. 11 years? 10 if they officially vote on it in a year? After the two-fer announcement with Paris and LA, they must really be drying up on the interest shown by various cities to host. The bid campaigns and the voting was actually interesting to pay attention to.

I'll take a more positive stance by saying that it's the IOC doing a better job at due diligence and working with national OCs to ensure events are actually planned and developed accordingly, because...

...this is where the majority of the bribing came into play.

Who would host the opening and closing ceremonies? That's an internal fight I would not like to go through. Maybe the best out of three Leafs vs Habs to host them. No pressure. That being said no thank you. I'd love to see a Quebec City Winter Olympics though.

Methinks the IOC wants to strike while the iron is hot.

They have a credible candidate city and governments supportive of the Brisbane bid. If they wait too long to confirm, the IOC runs the risk of having Brisbane drop out if sentiment changes or the government cools to the idea of hosting the Olympics.

So, by locking in Brisbane now, they've committed strongly. It's hard to back out once you've been chosen as the host city. Has it ever happened?

1976 Winter Olympics. Denver won the bidding process but bailed when costs rose so the games were relocated to Innsbruck. Denver was selected by the IOC in 1970 but in 1972 in a state referendum they rejected the games. The IOC offered the games to Whistler but they were also turned down by the new BC provincial government brought in that year.

I think some games were cancelled in the 1940s but that was due to the war.

Love the mentioning of Kirkland Lake!

I remember watching that on TV with my Dad. We couldn't stop laughing! The funniest part was that they opened up the roof during a rainshower. The singers kept singing "open up that dome" throughout the show but you could hear the crowd shouting "close it, close it, close it" towards the end.

In my list of desirability:

1. Quebec City Winter Games
2. Toronto (and maybe Montreal) Summer Games
3. Vancouver or Calgary Winter Games

Part of the appeal of going back to Vancouver is that at least a lot of the infrastructure is there from the last time.

That said, the cost of the Olympics has grown to exceed the benefits it delivers IMO. There are probably better ways to spend $15-20 billion than on hosting a two week sports event.

I doubt he'd go for it. Sadly the Olympics and the IOC have become symbols of politico-corporate cronyism at its worst, something that Neil Young abhors.

No probably about it.

That being said, the tide has really turned against the IOC. The fact they're trying to lock up candidates a decade in advance is a sign of desperation.

Not too many countries banging down their door these days.

Throw Ottawa into the mix and you might get a couple of extra decent venues (Landsdowne, baseball stadium (whitewater? probably not?) I think the concept of a regional olympics is an interesting one.

Ottawa would be great for most everything (can you imagine Olympic x-country, biathlon, etc. in Gatineau Park? ) but would need either Tremblant or the Adirondacks in NY state for the downhill ski events.
