Has Uptown's streets gotten more restaurants, cafes, and shopping yet? Last time I was there a few years back, it was still limited.

There are more street frontage restaurants, but shopping has not improved much. 70% of the retail up here are restaurants and they cater to office workers, which means a lot of the restaurants hidden in office buildings (like the Overstreet Mall, Founder's Hall, 2 Wells Fargo Basement and Atrium etc.) are closed after hours and on the weekends.

My ex-coworker came into town for a meeting with Duke Energy this week and we met up for lunch. When I did a quick search for restaurants, half of them didn't even show up on google, what's up with that? Of course since I work here, I knew what's missing.

Reimagining Ballantyne: What Northwood has planned for its major Charlotte investment

Quote:
A new master plan and vision for the future of Ballantyne Corporate Park in south Charlotte calls for thousands of apartments in high-rise towers, bespoke retail outlets, an amphitheater and food trucks, farmers markets and parks on land that is today a golf course.
Quote:
The first phase, which will take place over the next five years, focuses heavily on retail and housing; about 1,000 apartments by Northwood Ravin could be developed, some in high rises, along with about 125,000 square feet of retail by Northwood Retail, geared toward chef-driven food and beverage venues, coffee shops, boutique retailers and some national brands — but not a significant amount of chains, Barton said. The retail and residential will be developed as part of a 25-acre Ballantyne Center, where the 18th hole on the golf course is today, directly behind The Ballantyne hotel.

A stream largely hidden by trees today will serve as the centerpiece of a new park at Ballantyne Center, adjacent to the commercial development. An amphitheater will be built north of the park and development, near SPX Flow's office building.

NEW: A mixed-use development at the Charlotte Transportation Center site in uptown has been proposed and CATS has made a call for competing offers. If any type of redevelopment is approved at this block, valued at nearly $23M, it would be significant: https://t.co/HsYsRG51by
I was thinking about this lot the other day. It would a great location for a new tallest.

What say we bring back Four First Union?

Uptown Construction round up

Went for a walk around uptown today. Tried to grab a pic of every uptown high rise under construction.

Ally and Legacy Union 1. Ally Charlotte will be 26 stories and 378 feet. Legacy Union 1 is topped out at 35 floors and 635 feet

A 22 floor and 280 foot JW Marriot will cover that parking ramp wall. Foundation work is underway

Legacy Union 2 will be anchored by Deloitte and will be 18 floors and 290 feet

Less than a block away, the 41 floor ~641 foot Duke Energy Charlotte Metro Tower has begun site work. This will eliminate the last surface lot in this area of uptown.

Down Stonewall Uptown 550 is topped out almost open. 20 floors and 252 feet. Residential

This is the 15 floor Grand Bohemian Hotel. Topped out.

Never ending foundation work continues on the 420 foot Hotel Intercontinental

The Ellis, a 33 floor 384 foot residential tower is out of the ground.

The First National Bank building will be 29 floors and 365 feet. It’s mixed use office and residential

And the federal court house expansion and a mid rise hotel round it out

AMAZING UPDATE! I had no idea that the Lennar project is now the Ellis, and also that it is that far along!

No new tower for BB&T/SunTrust in the near future. Making Hearst the HQ...good choice imo. Plus a trading floor is available shall they decide to go that route. On the downside, Founder's Hall (my go to spot for a walk during inclement weather) will be even more crowded. Bank of America Plaza, Bank of America Corp., 1BAC, Ritz Carlton, and Hearst are all connected to Founder's Hall.

https://www.bizjournals.com/charlott...of-hearst.html
Quote:
The proposed merger between BB&T and SunTrust has selected Hearst Tower for its Charlotte headquarters.

The combined bank will lease 561,000 square feet at the North Tryon office tower. Its lease agreement includes a 15-year term at the 970,000-square-foot building in uptown, ultimately backfilling what is currently office space for Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) and law firm K&L Gates, as well as an option to buy the tower from Cousins.

The space could house up to 2,000 people in the future, the bank said.
Quote:
The banks also have an option to purchase the tower from Cousins for $455.5 million, a one-time option that could be exercised through the fourth quarter of this year. If it opts to buy Hearst, the banks and Cousins would close on the property in the first quarter of 2020.
Quote:
King said the new bank was looking for an iconic building in Charlotte's financial district that would allow employees to move in quickly.

He said it would be hard to build a building that rivals what Hearst Tower offers.
To honor this event, the bank should commission a sphinx statue in the Hearst Plaza to make the tower complete.

If Ballantyne keeps it up, it seems Charlotte could end up being like 2-3 cities in one (Uptown, South Park, and Ballantyne). I don't think South Park's skyline is going to grow, but Ballantyne's could definitely start to get some height and density.

South Park is not that far from Uptown, maybe replace it with U-City? If I'm not mistaken, U-City is the 2nd largest employment center after uptown.

And speaking of the area, University Place is getting a revamp.

Quote:
Dallas real estate investor EB Arrow has big plans to overhaul a suburban University City shopping center if a rezoning petition is approved.

EB Arrow, which acquired University Place One and Two last year for about $18.2 million, is planning a five-story, 182,000-square-foot building with office, civic and ground-floor retail space; Novel University Place, a 308-unit garden-style multifamily property to be developed by Crescent Communities; a 2.5-acre lakefront linear park with a children’s play area; and renovations to much of the pedestrian trail around the lake at University Place.

That first phase of development is contingent upon approval of a rezoning petition, the hearing of which is planned for Monday. Later phases at the project could include medium-density residential, additional office space or a hotel, EB Arrow says. Construction on phase one would take about 18 to 24 months, according to a spokesman for the developer. An investment amount was not disclosed.
Quote:
A new University City Regional Library could be part of the new office building on site. EB Arrow says it is in discussions with the library to build out a space that could include a two-story library with a separate exterior entrance and a large lakefront patio.

A concept by KTGY...for fun. Similar to the Mira Condos in San Fran; perhaps one day we will have something like this.

Might be difficult to physically move some of the other buildings, as they have in this rendering, LOL, but the render itself is fantastic

7th & Tryon failed bid by Cousins/Integral. Word is that Metropolitan Partnership/Baupost Group won. Hopefully the master developers will officially be announced with renderings soon...

Developer Northwood Ravin said in a press release Monday that it will start construction on its 500 West Trade project next month. The plans call for 354 luxury apartments in two buildings, one 14-story and one seven-story.

In case you forgot what the project looks like...the 6-fl building has gained one floor since the renderings.

A new Gold Cup attendance record for the Charlotte Metro. Though not an overall soccer record (a game between England’s Liverpool and Italy’s Inter Milan in 2014 attracted 69,364 to uptown).

I was in uptown trying to catch up on some work over the weekend and there were Mexican fans everywhere! I watched the game in the 2nd half and was rooting for Martinique (felt bad for them).

A blue bird told that me a new MLS/Panthers Stadium is in the works at Pipe & Foundry...I don't really want a new stadium >( But if it means reconnecting the grid to 3rd Ward, I might be less sad.

With the recent announcement of Las Vegas bid being backed by Baupost Group, the competition is getting stiffer for that 30th spot.
