7/7/2022 Crane Sections Delivered Today
Looks to me like the parts are for a crawler crane, not a tower crane.

Very exciting! The comment from Lendlease is odd to me though. Why deliver the crane if this isn’t starting immediately?

Iceman12 - My guess is that the permits to start are coming soon so that the foundation work can begin. Since the BART is nearby an agreement to dig must be granted. The BART tunnel turns at Van Ness Avenue & Market Street to meet Mission Street.

If the construction company does not own the crane it is rented which is very expensive, therefore it will be put into use as soon as possible. The crane can be put in place soon so as to be ready when the permits are issued. If the construction company owns the crane the job site is a good place to store it (in a vertical position).

The aerial photo does not have enough resolution to be certain, but it looks like the pad for the crane is being prepared.

Exciting, indeed. I have lived one block from the underutilized area for 51 years.

timbad - !!!! thanks for pointing out that. I was thinking of a different kind of crane! The vertical kind.

Good eye Timbad. I walked by the site on Sunday and it looked like it was getting ready for excavation [foundation work].

This is actually a crane owned by Malcom a company that drives piles. These piles will be driven, covered, and then uncovered again once the waterproofing and concrete are ready to be installed.

Wednesday July 13, 2022 - lots of activity now on the site! The view from Market St. of the site is now blocked. I got photos from Fell & Van Ness Street.

The level of the site is 2-3 feet below the sidewalk at his time.

As Jlo said a few days ago, they need to drive piles into the ground first. Excavation probably starts in the autumn, my amateur guess is October or soon after.

July 13, 2022 - NOTE THE CONCRETE IN THE LOWER RIGHT IN THE PHOTO. I long ago noticed something odd in the "blue prints" of 30 Van Ness & was puzzled by a section of the old building that was not to be removed. I have been told the concrete section which extends into the basement is being retained for "historic" reasons. Correct me if I am wrong but I see nothing historic about the building that was at this site. nonsense.

Could it be to retain the F.D.C (Fire Department Connection) standpipe on that section of concrete? I haven't been around that area in a while but on Google Streetview there's a label for one on the construction fence in that approximate location.

obemearg - see my post in this series, Number 53, of the architectural, plan which says that a portion of the wall is to remain from the previous building. The standpipe is part of the wall pictured in my photo, the sole purpose is for historical reasons, and I have no idea what history it is. I have spoken to two people on the job site who confirmed what is pictured has no other purpose other than as an artifact.

I think it is a cement silo meant to assist with drilled piles, but I may be wrong.
