Mystery photo?

It's not a mystery as to one of the people in this photo, Clark Gable.

My aunt, Virginia, with Clark Gable, perhaps in Van Nuys, California (c. 1944). She was modeling then, and had gotten an invitation from a friend to see the motorcycle hill climbs, which were evidently a regular weekend event. Gable and his friends were motorcycling enthusiasts, and my aunt met a few of them there. As one of the group happened to be a photographer, and happened to have color film loaded in the camera, this image must have been in the, uh, stars.

I think my aunt was eighteen at the time, and says that Gable was the biggest thing in Hollywood. One might imagine the impression this meeting left on her, newly arrived in Los Angeles. She never saw him again in person.

I don't know exactly where the photograph was made. To my aunt's recollection, the group didn't drive far into the San Fernando Valley, which leads me to think it might have been near Ventura Boulevard. The then-undeveloped Santa Monica mountains probably would have made for a good place for the hill climbs.

I don't believe Gable signed the photo, despite the autograph. The signature doesn't match well with other specimens I've seen online. Too, I don't know why the word "Tex" appears in the upper right hand corner, other than that my aunt had decided to go by the nickname for awhile. It may be that the photographer wrote both of these items on the photo to remind him of his subjects.

Clue? Can we find the location using that sign on the right? It looks like three words. The second and third words are MILITARY ACADEMY, but the first one?
Anyone know any Military Academy's in the valley in 1944?

I realize that we've seen an endless supply of rain/flood photos, but I believe this is new to NLA.

This 1934 photographs shows "a river of water coming down west 2nd and Figueroa Streets."

Intrigued by the image of Museum and Dimmick, I fired up Google Earth and took a drive up Dimmick. Just a short distance uphill I found what looks like a classic[IMG]s1074.photobucket.com/user/johnmaddoxroberts/media/635%20dmmick%20dr..jpg.html[/IMG] Streamline residence identified as 235 Dimmick.

There was another restaurant in San Francisco called Exposition Fish Grotto. They didn't have an LA location as far as I know but it may have been advertisint here in 1940 because of the Golden Gate International Exposition going on in its second year, at Treasure Island.

Bernstein's opened the LA restaurant about 1931 and closed 1942.

This Julius Shulman photoset contains five images of two different buildings which only seem to be linked by their architect, so I've decided to post half today and (hopefully) half tomorrow. The first two pictures show the Tubesales building. This is "Job 925: Earl Heitschmidt, two buildings (Los Angeles, Calif.),1951".

I found Tubesales at 5400 Alcoa Avenue, Vernon in the 1956 CD. The windows have lost their louvres, and the front building has been extended to the right (notice the white line in the brickwork near the door), but otherwise it looks much the same.

From this angle, the Tubesales name is still visible on the gable of the factory building behind. I don't know how long Tubesales was at this address - the 1987 CD lists them at the appropriately named 2211 [S] Tubeway Avenue. TW Metals (see below) is still there today.

Yay- on to the next mystery then!

The SF World's Fair post reminded me that I have this 1941 photo of my grandmother's - her girlfriends hamming it up somewhere in LA in front of a Model T "jalopy" with handpainted sayings all over it, like Andy Hardy's. "Keep Them Flying" is one of them- someone was paying attention in English class. They've got one of these decals from the Golden Gate Expo. Location unknown- but maybe Exposition Park area. That's where they lived then.

Could it be Ridgewood? 20764 Venutra Blvd. It was there by 1943.

Hey that's cool! Here's roughly the same shot—

—twenty years later, again looking W on 2nd from Fig toward Fremont St., as seen in HossC's post here. In the 1934 image one can just make out the Hotel President blade sign, far right. Notice how the Dallas Apartments decided to make their painted sign smaller to accommodate a billboard.
