I just may do that; if they have Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" on the jukebox, I'm there! BTW doesn't that song seem to be a standard for a local bar or pool hall?

Random pics, of dinner out and a walk, Thursday, 4.21.2022.

We had dinner at an esoteric cheese shop that doubles as a restaurant and bar.

Cider.

Tuna pâté.

Cheeses.

More cheese and crackers and stuff.

And more booze.

The shop. My partner ended up buying some pâté.

Oh their cheeses...

And their wines.

Then we went for a walk.

Random pics...

Today, Sunday, 4.24.2022, we took a little excursion by public rail transit...

...to the USC campus for the LA Times Festival of Books, which I read somewhere is the largest book festival in the US. In addition to selling books, they also have musical performances, talks/discussions with authors, poetry readings, activities for kids, food trucks...

Billy Porter was talking about his latest book. We honestly don't know who he is. In past LA Times book festivals, we've seen Barbara Eden, Tippi Hedren, and Billy Idol talk about their books. Billy Idol even gave an impromptu performance as well.

I ended up getting "Gems of Buddhist Wisdom." My partner bought a book about Nader Shah, an 18th century Persian ruler.

A chef was giving a cooking demonstration at this tent...

...it was author and chef Jet Tila.

Then we walked around a bit. It was quite warm today, though, so we took it slow.

Then it was back to waiting for the train to go home.

Photos taken today, 4.30.2022.

I don't know what they're turning the Variety Arts Center into. Back in the early 1990s, I used to go clubbing here. Every floor had a different type of music; they had a hip-hop floor, a techno floor, etc.

^Nice to see some DTLA! $12 coffee... that's just a step too far. Curious to hear your impressions of the redone Water Court in Bunker Hill. Also, how was the general street life around downtown?

Yeah, unless of course if it had booze in it, then I'd be willing to pay 12 bucks. Like maybe some ouzo in it or something? In fact, you can have a coffee with Metaxa and ouzo in it at the Great Greek in Sherman Oaks, and I think it's under 10 bucks.

I'm not sure if I like the redone Water Court (and I'm not even sure if it's been renamed yet). My partner and I would go there regularly for Grand Performances. Yeah, I understand the cost/trouble with the upkeep of the water feature, and now that the water is gone, people seeing a performance can get closer to the performers... but it somehow cheapens the look of the space, in my opinion. It seemed more grand and monumental when there was water and fountains. Maybe I just need to get used to it.

The street life on Sunday seemed sporadic---busy with people at some spots, empty at others... at least the parts of downtown LA that we went to. We didn't go to the Historic Core Farmers Market like we often do when we go downtown on a Sunday, and we went kind of later in the day, too, like around 1-ish. We mainly went to eat at Cafe Fig (and to see the revamped Water Court). I wanted to ride Angels Flight too, because we hadn't done that since right before the pandemic hit. Grand Central Market seemed kinda busy.

The Chapman Market, built in 1928-1929, a proto-strip mall, basically. I think by 1915, Los Angeles had the most registered vehicles of any city in the world or something like that. LA had jumped on the automobile bandwagon early on, so by the 1920s, there were already car-oriented developments, and the Chapman Market was one of them. The Chapman Market was constructed with big parking spots in the middle with numerous stores surrounding the lot---in other words, a strip mall. But, this strip mall is also flush with the sidewalk, with entrances off the sidewalk as well as off the parking lot. All built in a wonderful Spanish Revival style.
