'Mike Smith has more points in this game than M.K. has saves'

Comment of the year.

Saw that with danault ruled out for tonight's game. It will be the first time in Canadiens history that they dont ice a Quebec-born player.

Ya I wonder if there was some pressure from higher up to slot in the Quebec kid. If the Habs won like 5-0 their first game in 100 years without a French Candian the media would be in a frenzy.

Yeah, 100 in 53 is absolutely ridiculous. It's not like there's a shortage of decent seasons here with McKinnon and Kane (I don't know how he keeps the ridiculous pace each year), Marner and Matthews. But then McDavid is 33 points clear of anyone not his linemate.

It was nice to see Kopitar get his 1,000th point this week, but there was very little fanfare. He's had a great season this year too.

I think it's an absolute failure on the NHL/broadcasters part that McDavid is having a truly historic season, at the very least the best in 20+ years, and hardly anyone knows about it. Part of it is likely due to the division format, with no cross-border play, but even in Canada I feel like this is really not drawing as much attention as it should. I'm hoping this will actually improve under the ESPN contract. They will be motivated to start pumping more NHL highlights through Sportscenter, and if theres one thing ESPN knows how to do it's market stars. If the NHL wants to grow and stay relevant, they need to be capitalizing on a player who is doing things akin to Messi in soccer, or Steph Curry in basketball. It's a lot easier for someone who doesnt follow hockey to get drawn in by a points race that they casually check in on sports center every few days, or when they see a crazy Mcdavid breakaway goal on Twitter.

If McDavid were on a US-based team, the NHL would do MUCH more to promote him.

It's tough enough for the NHL to get nation-wide recognition of its stars as it is - and it's almost impossible when the player is on a Canadian team. You can bet that Bettman and the NHL board of governors weren't happy when the Oilers won the draft lottery. They feel like its a missed opportunity.
To a lesser extent, they probably weren't happy when the Leafs landed Matthews - especially since he's an American-born player.

^ They've had the NHL for a hundred years down in the States, if the broader population ignored Hull, Howe, Crosby, etc. you can bet they'd have ignored McDavid too. But hope springs eternal, I suppose.

Yeah, I'm talking from the NHL's mindset. They still keep hoping for hockey to be in the national spotlight in the US - something on par with the NFL, NBA and MLB... but it'll never happen.
