Agreed. They could ask for donations though...

One day, 5 days?? The last break takes from Thursday to Monday morning. Hope this one takes not longer.

Maybe they should introduce payment. I wouldn't mind paying let's say 5 Pounds/month e.g. to be able to make posts.
I have enough payments in my life, including one just to turn on my computer and run the internet. I can promise you if they add payments to SSC or SSP, myself along with many others will say goodbye for good. Like you said jorgen, as long as I don't pay to use SSC I don't mind it being down for periods.

Poles and other main users in such a case would create their own forums.

I already pay 50 EUR each month (37£) for fast internet only. Ask me to pay for ssc and I say goodbye. After all, there is an European section here as well and the London thread - the one I am interested in (and Jorgen, etc.) - is pretty well done.

Skyscrapercity.com used to be ad free until about two (?) months ago, then Jan decided to use google ads to get some funding to pay for the servers and stuff. I don't think he would like to introduce a mandatory fee for users, but I for one would be willing to make a (annual) donation, if it would help to keep the site running.

The thing is, if we had to pay say.. £5 a month, Some wouldnt pay, but in that we would get rid of alot of the server filling garbarge which causes the problems in the first place. another idea would be to do away with all threads that are not skyscraper related..... or like this one make people register or be turned away during busy times ???????

5 pounds or 5 dollars or euros per month would be completely unneseccary. Plus, Jan would be able to retire early if 20,000 plus members started paying a monthly fee like that. But voluntary donations could be an option, imho.

That the site is down at the moment may have nothing to do with funding though. I guess we'll find out once it's up and running again. Let's hope that happens soon, because I'm suffering from withdrawal symptons. :p
