It would be fantastic if they were to somehow place a flat or even a slightly sloping 'roof'....perhaps even a reflective piece... over the rows and rows of train cars taking up all that space.
Imagine being in one of the top floors of the residential building and looking down to see all of those eyesore train cars being covered with something artsy looking?
Would that project even be a possibility with such a large and unsupported space?
Perhaps once the entire multi-building project is finished, the developers along with the voices of the new residents will be able to get permission from Port Authority to do such an eyesore covering creative solution to having to see the trains.
To have a covering put in place to avoid ruining what most likely will be one of Manhattan's most spectacular sunset views over the water would be the final part of what is going to be a major contribution to the city's skyline.

You do realize that the next phase of the development is over those trains right? More skyscrapers to come.

Yes; but while these forthcoming towers will almost certainly be shorter, the hope that architectural distinction will prevail is assured.

It will also be exciting to see how, in this section of the Yards, open space for residents and their families will be integrated into a 21st century urban fabric.

Heaven forbid you don't have to see the trains?!? Who doesn't like trains? I don't want to know a person who doesn't like trains...

Not that I do not like trains. they are a part of NYC life.
However, when you have what will probably be one of the best water/sunset views in the city, do you really want to see the trains in front of that view?

As far as future building being built over this space, that is years in the making I don't even believe plans have been finalized yet have they? The proposal I was making was UNTIL further construction is finalized and started, a roof of some sort would be an idea water/view enhancement.

Context, my friends.

Trains on tracks--provided that said trains are running on said tracks, regarless of boarding and destination points--are not an eyesore.

Now...Parked trains on a massive open railyard? With said rail yard located direcly adjacent to an extremely large city skyline? |

Plans are finalized, architects have been chosen, though we haven't seen the actual designs yet. We should see some movement on the railyard by next year if not this one. The new platform will differ from the current one in that it will be above street level.
