Stephenville has this building - I've always called it the octopus building because of it's arms, as have most people of my generation (under-30) but anyone who was alive when the American base was open calls it the "Mole Hole". It was built by the US Air Force as a barracks for on duty pilots and personnel. When there was a fighter squadron based here the pilots on duty would sleep here in one of the below ground barracks levels. The doors/hallways lead directly to the different basement levels, so if there was a threat and the planes were scrambled into the air pilots could run from their bomb sheltered barracks to their planes on an adjacent apron. Most recently it was an accountants office, but it's now for sale - for $599,000.

There are also a bunch of these bunkers littered around town, like interspersed among the golf course fairways. The town opens a couple in the summer for tourists to go into and walk around.

Some of those figures are downright creepy. There's probably a horror movie to be made about that Humpty Dumpty... he comes alive, stalks and eats people who wander past.

That treehouse is awesome though. The kind of thing I imagined building when I was a kid. Plus it may provide protection from carnivorous fairy tale egg-men.

The Rooms in St Johns always looked incredibly bizarre (and hideous) to me.

Yeah, with the exception of the foreground, there is a lot of ugly in that picture, which is a shame because St. John's has a ton of character and should be a gorgeous town overall.

I think the Rooms biggest problem, no pun intended, is its size. Like Alegen said, St. John's should be a gorgeous looking little old port town, but instead you have this huge modernist monstrosity that just domineers the whole skyline and detracts from its quaintness.

I had a pennant from Flintstones in Chilliwack.

I actually think the Rooms is more postmodernist than modernist but outside of that I completely agree! If the Rooms was smaller it would be much better.

Oh for sure, it totally is! I just mean modernist more in the sense that it is strikingly modern compared to nearly everything else on the skyline.

Ah I see. I totally agree. The ironic thing is that The Rooms was meant to represent traditional Newfoundland fishing houses and blend in with its surroundings. As you can see it failed miserably .

I met the guy who bought the Flintstones' car from there when it closed. He told me he has it on his front lawn at his home in Wetaskiwin and it's a bit of a draw for the locals.

The blue spandrel / glass on that legislature building in the background is more of a mystery to me. Looks awful.
