This is always a hot issue. You will have just as many people say the opposite. I don't think the building tries to be to faux New Orleans. Obviously id rather see denser development right there. Even a Waffle house on the ground floor of a midrise would be great.

Proposed Plans for Virgin Hotel New Orleans(these renderings aren't the best quality but I guess we get an idea of what they are going for).

Great to see this major piece of blight being auctioned off.

Glad to see that the old Holiday Inn is going to auction. Such a major piece of blight as you enter the city from the east. I don't care if it gets demolished or redeveloped, as long as something happens with it.

The Virgin Hotel looks to be about the height I expected for that area. Anything over 150' tall would have been pushing it with the planning commission. Now let's see if we can Virgin America flying here to compliment the hotel. Not sure if Virgin Atlantic is in the cards...although I think we all wouldn't mind that.

The drawings of the new hotel look great. Another step forward for New Orleans.

I think the Waffle House designers were going to be criticized no matter what. From the article: "In fairness, the powers-that-be in New Orleans likely wouldn't have welcomed such a brash insertion [usual Waffle House design] on Canal Street. The site, next to a huge new VA hospital now under construction, falls in a special zoning overlay district to promote compatible development (although there's a pretty brash Midas auto repair location down the street). A company spokesperson said she believes the new design "is somewhat unique to this location." "

Btw I emailed Councilmember Cantrell my support for the Virgin Hotel project and she has already responded so I would recommend others on here do the same. Takes a minute of your time but really helps. That said from the Neighborhood Participation Report it seems the neighbors were really only concerned about how the rear alleyway would be used and that's a valid concern.

Not much change in office occupancy year over year from Q1 2014 to Q1 2015. Looking at overall office vacancy metro wide for Class A and B properties, it dropped from 13.6% in Q1 2014 to 13.4% in Q1 2015.

The CBD has a vacancy rate of 13.7%; Metairie is at 6.9%; Kenner is at 10.1%; Elmwood is at 45.7%; Westbank is at 41.7%.

Why does the Virgin Hotel proposal look so much like ass?

Is it too much to ask that a cool, edgy hotel chain might put up a decent building that doesn't look like a 12-year-old drew it in SketchUp?

I get your point but remember this was just a massing drawing for a neighborhood meeting. They dont have to deal with hdlc so while I agree with you on the quality of the renderings this isnt really a final product just something to show height and scale. But yes that has to be some of the worst 3d rendering Ive ever seen. Save for the pool its horribly done.

BTW someone who rented at the Paramount said they have 7 units left. Thats a pretty impressive rate for a building with that many units.

Adopted CEAs for the Mirabeau Water Garden and the Broadmoor Drainage Project

The Council adopted Ordinance Calendar No. 30,751, authored by Councilmember Brossett, authorizing the Mayor to enter into a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) between the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana to facilitate Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding for preliminary engineering for the Mirabeau Garden Storm Water Management Project in District "D".

City and State officials are partnering to create the 25-acre Mirabeau water retention park at the former site of the Sisters of St. Joseph Convent. The Sisters of St. Joseph Convent is providing a long-term lease agreement with the City to facilitate the project. The garden will include water retention features such as ponds, pumps, and simulated marshlands. It will also include parklands, a swimming pool, and athletic fields. The Mirabeau Water Garden is a demonstration project that could serve as a model for other large vacant spaces throughout the City if successful.

District "D" Councilmember Brossett said, "The Mirabeau Garden will help solve multiple problems with one project. It finds a use for a vacant property, lessens flood risks, and provides recreational opportunities. It is exciting to see new and innovative projects being completed in District 'D'."

In related business, the Council adopted Ordinance Calendar No. 30,750, authored by Councilmember Cantrell, authorizing the Mayor to enter into a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) between the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana to begin preliminary engineering work for the Broadmoor Drainage Project. Preliminary engineering for the project is to be completed on or before July 15, 2015.

District "B" Councilmember Cantrell said, "The passage of this ordinance clears the way to begin improvements to the drainage issues we see in the Broadmoor neighborhood. It is important that we continue to work to protect our neighborhoods."

Wow! Only 7 units left at Paramount. That is extremely impressive. No wonder they are getting the next building up as fast as possible.

Great shots. Some really impressive architecture over there that's been under utilized. But no longer!

New NOLA taproom looks cool. It could get excessively hot in the old one ...

I've walked by the AT&T building so often but don't have a clue what it is! Is it a telephone exchange? Is this common to have in large office building in prime real estate locations?

Yeah, many CBDs have these due to the density of phone connections.

I have heard that modern technology has drastically reduced the space requirements for switching devices, so much of this space now sits empty. For security reasons, they haven't tried to adapt this space for office or other use in any US city that I'm aware of.
