It was going to happen anyway.

Even the Ford government had re-committed to it after putting it under review.

This might mean more federal 'gifts' of funding, especially if a federal election happens in the next couple of years.

I have a feeling the PC will drag the negotiation with FN’s on though... That’s what they do.

The last part makes sense to me now. With a looming election in a few years, liberals actually need to cash out on their promises.

I found something interesting about putting bike paths back in, when I was trying to find the interchange design for North Bay Expressway to no avail.

All 4 laning should always have a secondary road that follows it as an EDR. The fact that this is ignored is a bad thing. When an accident happens, the highway could be closed for well over 4 hours.

Exactly.

Plus having EDR means a maximum speed limit of 110 km/h is achievable.

It’s insane: MTO goes all over the top to perfect the design for freeways but leaves no thoughts about EDR’s (unless converting a 2-lane arterial into a freeway requires full-on realignment). I would rather just have diamond interchanges everywhere with a paved 6-metre wide EDR in a reasonable distance.

The EDR is called highway 11.

More like 141/124/522, 11 then 17, which is something else.

I remember one time back when Highway 11 was 2 lanes. There was a train derailment just south of South River. It ended up on the highway. The highway was closed for days while they cleared the train. People were talking about the detour around it was taking 4 hours.

Just imagine working on one side and living on the other?

Fantasy time: https://imgur.com/gallery/5kZ0t9U !
Disclaimer: I didn't draw this to scale.
The major changes that I made to MTO's drawing are as follow:
(1) extending Goodview Road to the planned roundabout to improve EDR for Highway 69 (400);
(2) modifying Highway 17 (417) Ottawa-bound offramp accordingly - all-way stop where it intersects Goodview Road Extension;
(3) another roundabout across Highway 17 (417) so traffic on SSM-bound lanes can access the EDR by going through both traffic circles (and vice versa).

In all surprises (even to me), it only took me at most 45 minutes to draw this. (I was expecting to spend 2 hours on it.)

The sad thing is, this is 2 major highways meeting. Pick another major highway interchange in Southern Ontario and it would not look anything like this.

Relax, at least the connection between the freeways will all be uninterrupted. Like I said, the outrageous one will be between 61 (north) and 11-17 (west). By the way, if I have time, I’m also gonna redraw the 11/17 interchange in North Bay.

Also, do I have to remind you of 401/8 (no uninterrupted connection between 401 east and 8 north, or between 8 south and 401 west), 401/416 (no uninterrupted connection between 401 west and 416 north)?

I think you should have a map ready in front of you next time you compare.

On your drawing, the upper right corner, that sharp curve would be at a really slow speed. It is already a tight corner, and it looks like it's only getting worse.

Like I said, I didn’t draw it to scale. I’ve always wanted to draw a flyover ramp from 400 Sudbury-bound to (4)17 SSM-bound but the terrain... it’s in the way.

The rock is very strong. A tunnel would work.

Fair enough. Goodview Road Extension to the planned roundabout already requires tunnelling under the ramp from (4)17 Ottawa-bound to 400 Toronto-bound anyway, so why not. Here’s the catch though: This will require the freeway ramps from 400 Sudbury-bound to either direction of (4)17 to be on the right while the main lanes proceed to the roundabout, or else it’s a complete redesign. Tunnelling Goodview Road Extension under (4)17 will be nasty...

....Or.....

Close off that entrance of Goodview. It is connected to Provincial Government Offices road, which is the lights at the end of the hill. That resolves that mess,
With this change, does it make it flow better?

What happens to “Every major highway must have reasonable detour routes”?

Going down Long Lake Road then South Lane Road for 400/69 looks annoying.

By the way, Goodview Road doesn’t connect to Highway 69 as it stands right now.

The better option, and trucks can take it is Highway 537. It would add about an hour or less, which is reasonable for up here. 4+ hours or crossing an international border is not.

Lol I think anything more than 2 1/2 hours is questionable.

My bad I meant the end of Goodview Road right under the ramp from 17E to 69S. It’s a cul de sac there. Of course the other end will be connected to some other roads which will eventually meet 69.

Most of Northern Ontario doesn't have detours that short.

The other end IS connected to another road. Gah! So, the part that is connected to 69, close it, and then it is not a worry.

I totally forgot Goodview Road sort of has 2 branches toward the interchange, one of which does meet 69. When we finally extend 400 there, of course the branch that meets the highway needs closing.
